Okay so I’m still totally freaked out, I can’t get back to sleep so I’m going to write this down so maybe I will feel better. First, let me say that there were no, repeat NO, casualties. No one even needed to be taken to hospital that I could see.

BF and I were woken up this morning at 5:30 by people honking horns. I thought they were just idiots until someone yelled “FIRE!!”. BF got up quick and looked out our bedroom window and saw flames shooting up, reflecting off the neighbor’s windows. Now we live in a row of townhouses so the first thing we do is grab some clothes and see if it’s the end of our row burning. Luckily it wasn’t. I guess I should explain how our lots are organized. On our side of the street, there are rows of townhouses, all perpendicular to the street. Each in pairs of two, so our townhouse faces another row, divided by a nice courtyard, the back our units have a laneway separating us from the next set of two, and allowing access to our garages. There are maybe twelve of these sets? And each set contains about 60 units each.

On the other side of the street it’s different, the row faces the road. Set back by the sidewalk and a little lawn area. It was a couple of those upper units (they’re divided into 4 levels) that were burning, the roof decks I think. But it was seriously scary, flames were shooting up really high, there was black smoke billowing everywhere. The wind was blowing towards us so I was totally scared that a spark or two might make it across the street and ignite one of our rows. Luckily the firecrews were way fast and got it under control in a hurry, maybe 15-20 minutes after the first alarms started going. But standing and watching what you know is someone’s house burn is terrifying. You can’t do anything yourself, you can only watch.

After it was pretty much over, the fire department still had to tear down a few things to make sure there were no sparks left that could potentially restart the fire, I tried to go back to bed. But I couldn’t, all I could think about was what if it had spread to ours, what would I do? Okay first, the cats and the important document folder I keep (we have a fire safe but it’s tiny and can’t hold 8 1/2 by 11 sheets flat so I keep my special documents in a folder that I can grab right by my bed). But what next? I have soooooo much stuff that I can’t grab everything. Our computer first, but what then? I have family pictures, jewelry, the OOAK painting that bf made and gave me one Christmas, my Windstones, our Lord of the Rings swords, my books (I have over 1500). I can picture myself shoving Windstones into whatever box…just get them out. And I’m a pretty serious bibliophile…what signed, first edition books?? How much will fit in the back of our car??

I keep imagining what I would come back to if we didn’t have time to grab anything but the cats and my purse. The memories all lost. My possessions reduced to ashes and cinder. That’s what I see everytime I close my eyes right now. It’s 10:00 am now and I’m still freaked. So forgive my rambling, I just needed to get this out. Thanks for reading and I hope I didn’t freak anyone else out. Time for a sedative and a nap for me, just have to try and turn my brain off.

Ach, fire can be a very powerful destructive force and spectacularly so. I remember seeing a house burning while we were on the highway about 10 years ago. The entire thing was in flames! That stuck with me, and it still does. Reading your post, I can still see it…

I’m glad no one was hurt, but still… memories are there, aren’t they? I just hope they don’t haunt you for too long.

          Hugs!

It’s really scary, isn’t it. 🙁 I had a scare on the bus ride home last year, when I saw a huge column of black smoke and it looked like it was coming from my apartment (turns out it was a house kitty-corner across the street, burned down–everyone escaped except some of the family pets 😥 ). The only thing that mattered to me at that moment was my cats and my novels.

Getting it all down on my LJ helped for me, so hopefully this post helps you. *hug*

I’m glad the fire department got it under control so fast and there were no casualties. Fires can spread out of control so fast. You and your bf should come up with a fire escape plan if you can, detailing things like what should be taken, what can be replaced, fastest exits from your home, and what should be left behind in case of an emergency. It’s good you keep your file within easy reach; it shows you already think in terms of emergencies.

Jasmine – yikes that’s scary!!! Roddy’s grandmother lost her home to a fire last week. Luckily mum and dad were there and got g’ma out safely. The hard part for g’ma has been what was lost; she gave me some pieces from her glass collection several years ago – now they are more precious than ever. We are most def glad that no harm came to any of our loved ones. We do have nightmares about it (especially me boyohs). I’m thankful YOU came to no harm!!! The memories will fade over time. Hang in there!

I am so glad that you are okay and there were no casualties or injuries. I hate to see someone’s house burn–the structure and furniture can be replaced but not the memories–I know what you mean. You can never replace the pictures, letters and one of a kind special gifts you’ve received or were passed down to you. I think that is our biggest fears–for our homes to burn down–because like you said, there is nothing you can do about it but watch.

Thanks guys. Writing it down did help. And the nap helped too. 🙂 Definitely going to be moving some things around so they’re within reach if we have to get out quick.

That is very scary! I’m glad you were ok. You can look at it another way too, this is an opportunity for you to evaluate what’s really important to you, and to come up with a “fire plan” which everyone should have. How about insuring your books and Windstones? Then, if disaster strikes, at least you know you’ll have some form of reimbursement to begin again.

The bright side of this is that you weren’t hurt, and it’s forced you to reflect on what really matters to you. Fortunately, your own home didn’t have to burn for this to happen. Now you can prepare yourself better, and get an evacuation plan going. Knowing what to do if an emergency strikes can give you a lot of peace of mind.

I think fires have got to be one of the scariest things in nature.

Oh, the books and Windstones are definitely already insured. But it would still be hard to replace the personally signed books and all the other personal stuff, you know, the family pictures, the paintings that bf has painted for me. That sort of thing, but rearranging is happening. And I’ve been going through the Red Cross disaster awareness sites and so I’ll be putting together a kit that I can grab quick and a kit to go in the car incase we can’t even do that.

There were people out today in front of their units trying to salvage what they could. Most of the damage isn’t even from the fire but water damage from the hoses. I still don’t know what started the blaze, I thought it would be rude to ask so soon after the fact.

Thanks for all the support everyone, it is very much appreciated.

Check the paper/online news. It’s bound to be reported somewhere with the probable cause.

fires are scary… we had a wild fire start up on the hills behind our families ranch. I guess some of the troubled girls from a foster care ranch thought it would be fun to set cookie sheets on fire and throw them in the air. It destroyed our nieghbors yard bot didn’t pass her pool. It did get her well and ruined the pumping equippment (15k in damage) then spread to our backyard. our barn is made of steel so it was charred but not ruined…the only thng that kept it from getting to our house was the fir department and the lack of burnable stuff around the house…we were on a cruise when it happened and didn’t find out till we got home. luckly my grandma came and took the pets, but didn’t tell us so as not to ruin our trip…It was a suprise the fire department cut our gate and broke our door to get to animals…but at least everything was safe. I still am not comfortable with the troubled girls living so close…if the orginization can’t handle their kids they need to be removed or rehomed. 😥 I’m glad that all is well for you and that everything is safe…
