I have been trying to sell a small laptop for a while on Craigslist, and it is such a magnet for the scammers that have such a huge network, and are getting into even the small-market Craigslist ads now. No matter how much i say on my ads, that I require LOCAL contact, CASH only, and a telephone call, for one to see the item IN PERSON, they must not read the ad, because they STILL send me an email, asking me for a Paypal address, so they can send a “payment” to me, with $150 to $200 for Express International shipping to the country of Nigeria! For those of you who are not aware of the scam, they actually will send an email that seems to come from Paypal’s domain name, some actually are using Paypal’s domain, they have Paypal’s letterhead, and they send you an email notifying you that you have received a payment, but it is “pending” until you send the package, and click on to something on the email, to input the tracking number, then the money will be placed in your account. Well, I was deleting the emails from the ones I knew to be scammers, because I don’t want to give them MY actual paypal email, but then I can’t prove they are scammers, or get them caught unless they actually attempt to send a fake payment, and the spoof team at Paypal seems to be the only ones trying to crack down on these guys, so I set up a dummy email on yahoo, and yesterday, when I was requested a Paypal address to pay my asking price plus an extra 150, I replied that I did not have a bank account, but my room-mate Frawda Lurt, would set up the Paypal account, and her Paypal address was her first and last name @ yahoo.com. That bozo still fell for it, and sure enough, I got a “notification of “intance” payment” from “Paypal, or should I say Frawda Lurt got it. I forwarded all the emails to Paypal.
XD XD XDJune 11, 2009 at 9:10 pm #498428June 11, 2009 at 10:29 pm #768854hee hee… That’s awesome! Most people wouldn’t go through the trouble of creating a fake account. It must be satisfying knowing you beat them at their own game. 😆

June 12, 2009 at 1:01 am #768858Oh I just love this! Unfortunately, they’re out there looking for their next unaware victim. This is good to know and will keep it in mind if it happens to me. I am currently not selling anything but would do on ebay–but they could be on there as well. The big tip seems to be that you can’t get your money until you send the package. Yeah, right! 😡 👿 TeeHee, another name my coworker and I give when we know let’s say a caller is a solicitor is ‘Helen Waite’. 😆
June 12, 2009 at 1:04 am #768859Ok, I never even noticed the name you put up. I did fall for the ebay mail once tho. Had to change everything. 😕 😳 XD
June 12, 2009 at 1:11 am #768860Holy crap that was SO amusing! XD
June 12, 2009 at 1:19 am #768861Apparently, according to Paypal, this Nigerian scam was on Ebay about a year ago, but they got that pretty much shut down, but some sellers did fall victim to the deal that they would go ahead and ship first, and get their “escrowed” payment afterwards. But they also for the most part got their money back, because Ebay protects its sellers, but these Craigslist scams are not protected, especially since they don’t really go into your Paypal account. Had this guy logged into Paypal and checked the email I provided him first, he would have seen the Frawda Lurt does not have an account to send money into, but that’s not what they do, they just send fake emails to say you have received funds, so hurry up and ship their package. According to Paypal, with all the volatile activities in that country, it seems it is a way of laundering money, and most of these items probably come back to the United States and get resold again. These are NOT nice people. 👿
June 12, 2009 at 1:35 am #768862so I sent another email to my scammer, saying I was not able to mail his package yet today, because I had to wait for my “room-mate”, Frawda Lurt, to come home and check her email for the “Paypal” payment. Then I asked him how he wanted it sent, and why is his son’s last name different than his last name. Let’s see if he answers me. he will probably send me back a response, telling me he needs me to mail it ASAP. I also thanked him profusely for helping me out in my time of need, lol! XD XD XD

June 12, 2009 at 5:40 am #768865I love the notebook scam Snap, makes me wonder if there is a large customs fee in Nigeria!
Of course I would still have to pay a lot for shipping and buying plastic keys and such. 👿June 12, 2009 at 5:50 am #768866Thanks for the link, Snap – great story. 😆
Good going, 49er. Keep it up! -
