Hey all, I just thought I would spread the word for those of you who didnt know: Symphony Orchestras are pretty cool.

My husband let me know that he was taking me to a symphony for Valentines day. Secretly, I was a little bummed… for one, that is not my kind of music, two, the concert was in Columbus, Ga… which is two hours away (I have morning aka all day sickness and I get car sick, so a 2hr drive was really daunting for me.) And three, I just thought I would be bored silly. Well, we went to see “The Three Phantoms.” They were three guys who at one time or another all played the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. I was expecting just alot of symphony music, but the three phantoms sang along with. Most of the songs were funny, they had skits in between some songs, and there were only 2 songs that were just symphony music with no singing. I was totally entertained, and not only that, we must have been the youngest couple there. I just thought I would spread the word that it is a really great form of entertainment (At least this concert was… I hope they are all like that) and for anyone who may be thinking about it to give it a chance. It opens up another romantic gift idea. 😉

Good for you! I grew up with classical music and opera, and though I really don’t listen to it anymore, once in a while, I like to be transported by that type of music.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Man when you were in Columbus, GA, you were near my parent’s (and my high school/college) stomping grounds. They live in Auburn, AL, about an hour or so away from Columbus. The Columbus Symphony is supposed to be pretty good. I never went over to Columbus too much. The areas around Fort Benning aren’t the nicest. Add in the fact that I knew where everything was in Montgomery, AL, and I didn’t have much reason to go there. Auburn is sort of a small town, but it’s growing fast.

Going to the symphony is one of our family’s favorite things to do! The boys love the Peer Gynt Suite especially the Hall of the Mountain King movement. The boys went for a scout campout and got out of the car whistling the Hall of the Mountain King. Almost immediately their scout master was whistling along with them. It slowly dawned on him what our boys were whistling and he whips around to face us with a very startled look on his face. “I don’t know of any kids that know opera!” he said. Then he asked the boys if they knew the name of the song they were whistling. ” ‘Course!” they said, “It’s the Hall of the Mountain King from the Peer Gynt Suite, don’t you know that?” and off they went to help set up camp leaving a totally amazed scout master in their wake… 😮

That’s awesome, twindragonsmum! I think I was 12 when I first heard that piece. 🙂

I havent heard any other symphonies in person. Do alot of them have a comedic bend, or was I just lucky? I will def be more open to it from now on.

Peg, Im in Alabama right now, so Columbus was about 2 hours away. Yeah, that area wasnt the nicest, but I can say the same about Rucker lol! Both these areas are pretty junky.

I think you got lucky with that particular show, though you never can tell. Columbus always has a wide variety of programs that come to the different venues to perform. Alvin Ailey performed there a few years ago. I can’t really remember so of the others off the top of my head. I know Jeff Dunham will be perfoming at the Civic Center there in March.

It always seems a lot of areas around Army bases tend to be a little junky.

Sounds like fun! What are you doing in Alabama? I thought you were….

While hiding somewhere in my head I'm on the lookout for white oriental dragons! Please let me know if you know of any available. Thank you!
