I have two brown male dragons and they are both quite different. The first brown I got was so different from what I was expecting that I thought at first he was a fake. My gut says he’s genuine. He has no felt on the bottom, but he did have the Windstone Editions stamp on the bottom. Is the darker brown an older sculpt? Here are some pics of them side by side.
The first guy looks alot like carved wood. The casting seems a bit rougher than the newer guy on the right.
Their forheads and crests are slightly different too…
I also noticed the eyelids are a bit different. The eyes on the older, darker brown dragon seem to be made of plastic, or at least made differently than the newer dragon. The pupils are not as ‘crisp’ as they are on the newer brown and are a lighter shade of blue. With that said, I have to admit that I really like my darker brown dragon. If he is an actual Windstone, why did the color change so much? Also I find it interesting you changed the sculpt a bit here and there – any particular reasons for that? Thanks 😀 !February 5, 2009 at 4:29 am #497567February 5, 2009 at 4:33 am #751078I like the coloring on the darker one better.
February 5, 2009 at 5:02 am #751079Wow, that darker one is lovely! I have almost exactly the same situation as you do, I have two brown males and one is much darker with less yellow than the other. In my case, it’s due to a very heavy antiquing job. He looks more rusty than anything, but for some kooky reason I like him better that way! The sculpts look different because they are, at least for the face. Your more yellow dragon has the ‘frown-eyed’ look to it that they cast for a while, until they made a different version. I’ll bet the darker one is older though, because he doesn’t have a felt pad.

February 5, 2009 at 12:58 pm #751080I like the older/darker one too. XD I have the same one (no felt, darker brown, etc), so I think he’s almost definitely real. Well, mine’s with Kyrin at the moment, but…I’m hoping he’ll be home soon. =) He was a ‘rescue’. >.>; *felt sorry for him*
February 5, 2009 at 1:13 pm #751081I have a Male Brown with no felt I picked up from eBay and he looks like a middle stage between the two you have..he’s def not that brown..but also certainly darker and not as yellow as the other.
February 5, 2009 at 5:20 pm #751082The eyes on the brown one look like they may be the old, non-fired eye in the pictures, maybe? In the closeup, it looks like the paint might be starting to pull away on the back side a little? I don’t know if any of the first browns ever came that way (that would be a Melody question), but if so, then he is probably from one of the first few batches as sculpts and colors were being tested and refined! If so, very lucky find! 8) He is very pretty in all his roughness!
As for colors, look at the peacocks. Some are ‘brighter’ or ‘darker’ than others, depending on who painted it when, since you have different painters over time, since they are all airbrushed by hand and not mass produced by a machine.
February 5, 2009 at 6:03 pm #751083Both appear to be genuine. As with the old greens, I believe Windstone had to change paint brands/colors during the production of these guys and so there are pretty considerable variations in color. The first batches do look different than the later batches of these colors.
By the way if anyone ever has one of these old brown males with no orange on them in decent shape that they’d want to trade for, hit me with a PM >_>Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comFebruary 5, 2009 at 6:15 pm #751084he is very pretty in that variation, I think I like the darker brown as well…. 🙂
February 5, 2009 at 7:12 pm #751085I love that dark old brown color. The only brown dragon I have is the lap and love her but I would love to add a dark guy like that to my collection. The only reason I haven’t gone chasing them on ebay is I’m afraid the pics aren’t accurate and I’ll get a yellowy one.

Oooh…really you sent a really old brown?? I really must take him out of his box and see then! I figured he was a normal brown so just left him in there until I was ready to work on him, but if he’s special, I might just take him out to peek. Wonders if you would notice if I switched my brown out with yours and sent him instead?? Yeah, probably, darn it!

February 6, 2009 at 12:08 am #751089The one of the left is, I think, an older version. Mine is even older than that, with absolutely no orange on it (though the flash makes the lighter brown look orange a bit) and no felt pad either! The scale are not as smooth, even the paint job is a bit off. I asked Melody and she said it was probably from the very first mold.
