Surging shoppers kill New York Wal-Mart worker
NEW YORK — A man working for Wal-Mart was killed on Friday when a throng of shoppers surged into a Long Island, New York, store and physically broke down the doors, a police spokesman said.
The 34-year-old man was at the entrance of the Valley Stream Walmart store just after it opened at 5 a.m. local time and was knocked to the ground, the police report said.
The exact cause of death was still to be determined by a medical examiner.
Four shoppers, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman, were also taken to local hospitals for injuries sustained in the incident, police said.
Wal-Mart said it was saddened by the death of the man, who was working for a temporary employment agency serving the discount retailer, and by the injuries suffered by shoppers.
“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” the world’s largest retailer said in a statement. It said the incident was still under investigation and referred any other inquiries to local police.
The Friday after America’s Thanksgiving holiday is known a Black Friday and marks what is traditionally the busiest retail day of the year, kicking off the Christmas shopping season.
U.S. stores across the country opened in the early hours of Friday to offer discounts to consumers hit by a contracting economy. Hundreds of shoppers waited on line before dawn at some locations to secure deals on holiday gifts.

And to think, when “customers” were asked to leave the store because someone died, they said ‘I’ve been on line since yesterday morning,’ and kept on shopping. How selfish can you be!? Someone just died because you people couldn’t act civil. I can’t believe people. I would have loved to be working there just so I could say “NO, you are leaving NOW” to everyone. I don’t care if you’ve been in line since yesterday, get out.
Can someone tell me why they changed the emoticons? Anyone know? These new ones are awful imo.
Today was the first time I participated in Black Friday, and its because of crap like this that I avoided it before. People are stupid and dont know the value of life… all they care about is their stupid Nintendo Wii.
I was gonna come ask if anyone else participated. I ended up spending over $800 today on gifts. I need to go pay bills…. Stores were crazy this morning. I missed the initial rush, thank God, but I did get some great gifts. The atmosphere was very tense, though I didnt see any fighting or anything.
Geeze! I guess this means I need to start getting hazard pay! People are sick… Wasn’t it last year when someone got stabbed to death for a Nintendo Wii on Black Friday?

I work retail, fortunately I work in the office now so I don’t have to deal face-to-face with customers much anymore. I don’t think I could handle them any more, I just can’t believe how obnoxious, rude, arrogant, thoughtless…. sorry, I’ll stop. I know most people are nice, but what kind of _______________ could WALK ALL OVER another person just to be able to buy that stupid toy or TV for a sale price ??

yeah…I dont go out on black friday, unless it’s just for a bite to eat. The stress and atmosphere isnt worth it for a couple dollars saved… 😕
:puke: All I can say is I’m glad I live in Canada and there is no Black Friday Insanity here (just Boxing Day).
All I did today was take my dog to get her staples out. I worked retail for several years, and people are I D 10 T’s… At least I worked for a boss who didn’t let us take crap from people!
I worked retail for many years of my life, and when I say that I had nightmares of black friday, that’s not an exaggeration. x_x It used to be hellish, often illegal shifts (e.g. they’d schedule me for 12 hours straight or I wouldn’t get breaks… etc) dealing with over the top, frantic, rude and pushy customers… all without even getting holiday pay…
Perhaps the saddest irony was that I’d see people spending hundreds, sometimes thousands, on gifts… and I knew that I had to go home and eat crackers with mustard on them for dinner because my minimum wage pay wouldn’t buy me much else.
