I woke up at noon (thats right I worked all night so I’m lazy) and Danny had told me he just put Alyssa to bed for her nap. I hear her in her crib going “Da da da da da da da” so I know she woke up and is playing and has no intentions of going back to bed. So Danny says he’ll go get her. He comes back with Alyssa in one hand and a plastic bag in the other. Somehow Alyssa conjured a plastic bag out of thin air and was sitting in her crib playing with it. I heard her playing with something and thought it was her fabric book that makes the same crinkly noise. So now I’m having a heart attack thinking how she could have wrapped that bag over her head and I just would have thought she went back to sleep.

It was a crinkly-crackly grocery-store-type bag? If it’s any consolation, it’s really hard to suffocate in one of those; the bag just doesn’t lie flat against your skin and you can’t get an airtight seal, which is how most such deaths occur. Of course, it would probably be possible to become starved of oxygen if you fell asleep with one of these bags over your head and were breathing stale air, so you definitely should not assume they are safe.
The bags to watch for are the thin polythene ones. Particularly the kind you get from a dry-cleaner. Even I feel uneasy sharing a room with one of those things. If you ever bring home anything like that, you should tie it in knots and bury it at the bottom of the trash before doing anything else.
October 8, 2008 at 7:35 pm #735256I think it may have been on a table on the outside of her crib and she somehow reached over the bumper pad and got it. Thats the only thing I can figure out. The only thing on that table were some clothes that needed to be folded and put away so I’m not sure maybe the bag was in there with them and I didn’t see it. She just had it in her lap crinkling the plastic to make noise so at least she wasn’t putting it over her head. I guess I need to move the table away from the crib, I just didn’t think she would be able to reach outside of the crib yet and thats where I put the baby monitor so I can hear her at night.
October 9, 2008 at 12:10 pm #735257Yikes! 😯 Yes, keep that table away from the crib because I heard a horrifying story of a baby who almost strangled himself with a moniter cord. I am glad Danny checked on her!
