So yesterday we took Alyssa to her first Ren Fair. It was fun and we dressed her up in her fairy costume which I don’t think she liked. While we were there I noticed Danny’s one eye was blinking slower then his other so I asked him to smile, frown, etc and the one side of his face was drooping. So we left the fair and I dropped him off at John’s Hopkins thinking he was having a stroke. He had a change of clothes with him but I didn’t so instead of sitting in an inner city hospital dressed like a bar wench with an 8 month old baby I rushed home to get changed and drop Alyssa off at his moms. So Danny walked in to the er and told them he had facial droop and thought he might be having a stroke so they sat him in the waiting room for three hours 🙄 After sitting there for 12 hours they told us he has Bells Palsy and they think Lymes disease. So they sent him home with antibiotics. So yeah we had an interesting day yesterday.

Oh yeah here are some pics (our friend took these with her super camera) 😉

This picture was taken right before I noticed his facial droop. It must have happened right after this because he doesn’t have any facial paralysis here

Oh, that stinks. My husband had Bell’s Palsy last year. It lasted about 6 months or so. He didn’t get it from a tick bite though, although that’s a very common cause. He got it from cold wind damaging that nerve node behind his ear while he was shoveling.

If Danny got Lyme’s Disease, make sure they treat it. It can cause other problems besides Bell’s Palsy (but I’m sure you know that).

I am glad there was some fun before this happened! I am not sure what these diseases are, but I hope he recovers!

I think they just diagnosed him with Lymes to explain the Bells Palsy. They are just assuming thats what he has and treating him for it but they said the blood test would take days to get back. He doesn’t have anything other then the palsy so I don’t know why they picked lymes of all things to diagnose him with.

Bell’s Palsy occurs when the nerve node behind the ear is damage, severing the nerves that run to the face on one side. There is feeling there, but no muscle control, so that side of the face just droops. It lasts a long time. The hardest parts are: the eye won’t close so it needs a gel to stick it shut at night and lubricate it and an eyepatch to protect it in case it opens, and eating when one half of the lips won’t close.

At least, that’s the worse things my husband had to deal with. And the self-esteem goes down because people look at you more.

Lymes’ Disease is caused by a deer tick bite. It is very damaging and can cause Bell’s Palsy. I don’t know too much about Lyme’s so I recommend looking it up on WebMD or Wiki.

He might be having a stroke, and they left him sitting there for 12 hours?? What the hell??? A stroke is serious, time is of the essence, what the eff were they thinking! I would raise holy hell!

The more I hear about how that hospital deals with you guys, the less I believe in their reputation as a stellar facility. So far their track record sucks rocks big time!

Now I’m mad and am really tempted to call up whomever is in charge over there and chew their arses out!

The pictures are wonderful, Danny, you handsome devil you, quit looking so good! You nabbed a good looking boy there, Laurie! You’re gorgous too, worry not..but I like boys, so I’ll drool on him and admire you and Alyssa. 😉

Anyway, I’m glad you had fun at the faire, and sorry the hospital sucked.

*hugs to all three of you*

Hopkins is great for the really strange off the wall stuff but the er sucks. I’ve called and complained but nothing ever comes of it. I think it would take a lawsuit before anything ever changes. I think this was the last straw for us, the next time he needs an er visit we are just going to the hospital I used to work at. At least there I know everyone and they will treat us alot faster then hopkins. If he needs to be admitted they can transfer him but I’m just not going to deal with that er again. It took Danny putting his clothes back on and threatening to pull his iv before they finally did something for us after we were back in a room.

I’m so sorry, you have yet another thing to deal with. You two are tough though, so I know you’ll get through this. (hugs)

Like I have said in the past, you should go to a different hospital, so I am really glad you guys won’t go there anymore.

No matter what we still have to go to Hopkins for his cf and transplant care. CF clinic there is wonderful and they are the only cf clinic around so we don’t have much of a choice unless we want to travel far far away. The only reason I keep taking him to Hopkins er is because of his cf and transplant. Not many hospitals know what to do for him so like an idiot I take him to Hopkins thinking they will know what is best for him. Silly me. At least we had fun at the fair, I want to go back next week 🙂

Ah, well that bites. You should try to dig domething up for a lawsuit. 😉 I hate how they treat Danny.

Ironic that he dressed to be a leper and ended up one, no?

Sorry was trying to be funny. I know…EPIC FAIL. I’m really sorry that he’s not doing well. =( Johns Hopkins is one of the best though, so make them do their job and fix him up right! (My dad spent quite a few months there and they literally brought him back from the brink of death…)

Big hugs all around and I’ll keep prayers for a speedy and efficient recovery!

I had Lyme’s when I was 19 (about half a gabillion years ago…) and one of the first diagnosed cases in Cali. Need to be careful about the results on the blood test for it as it can and often does come back with a false negative. There is a very small time window to find the anti-bodies before your body starts masking them and they don’t show up in the bloodwork. I really hope for Danny’s sake that it isn’t Lyme’s, because I have flares of it every year at the time of year that it was its worst (now, for instance). The stroke diagnosis is likely because it can imitate one; that’s what my docs thought at first. I’m glad they started him on antibiotics without waiting for a positive diagnosis… they literally clear it up over night. Hang in there. Hugs and prayers for you, Danny and Alyssa. And I’m really glad you had fun at Ren-Faire. Oh, and when Alyssa out grows her fairy wings, let me know and I’ll make her some new ones; it’s one of the things I do in costuming 😀
