Hey guys! I was wondering where I would go to sell five signed, numbered, limited collector’s editions of books by Dean Koontz?
Mr. Koontz kindly donated them to the rescue to help the dogs (The A-team in particular), but we don’t know where to go to sell them. But I know we have collectors here of all sorts, and it was my hope someone would know.
Thanks
If you’re curious about the A-Team here’s their story:
In late July, working in cooperation with our local animal control agency, five 8-month-old purebred Alaskan Malamute pups, all unaltered males, were surrendered to us by their owners. The owners had been cited for neglect for having 10 Alaskan Malamutes on their inner city property, with food and shelter enough to care for only 5 of them. They faced charges if 5 of the dogs were not removed from their property immediately. Sadly — and not surprisingly — the owners didn’t want to relinquish their 2 breeding pairs and the other 1 adult, unspayed, female. The pups were selected for surrender. Though there is nothing we can do about it, we have to assume the next unwanted litters are just around the corner …At any rate, though we had neither foster space for 5 big Malamute puppies nor extra funding lying around to care for them, this was an urgent situation. We feared how the dogs might be disposed of if we didn’t step in to help. In addition to the risk of the dogs being dumped somewhere or simply let loose to fend for themselves, dog fighting is a reality in Indianapolis. Northern breeds are prized as “bait dogs” because of their high pain tolerance, their stamina, and their non-aggressive natures … and our boys were located within the area specifically targeted by Indy’s dog fighting task force. Any “word on the street” or “free to good home” signs might place them in an unspeakable situation. And of course, even if they were passed off to other owners, this might have put 5 unaltered males approaching maturity on the streets or in the hands of the next person who only needed a female to start his/her own “business”.
When the pups were surrendered to our vet facility, we were horrified — not just at their physical condition, but at the fact that they acted as if they had never been around human beings! They had been fed, but nothing else. Without shelter or any semblance of care or attention, they are basically feral. When they came to us, they had to be carried in. They cowered in the far ends of their kennels in fear when approached, and they “went limp” if handled. They are infested with parasites, one has a bad eye infection, and what should be beautiful fluffy, puppy coats (despite the fact that they’ve only been alive for 8 months!) are beyond are matted to the skin with filth and neglect. They are beyond grooming, and we will have no choice other than to clip/shave them and start over.

That’s wonderful that Dean Koontz donated the books. Are they going as a set or individually? Do they have a set price or are you looking to auction them?
September 18, 2008 at 7:47 pm #733003I like Dean Koontz.. he’s a great author and really interesting person..
isn’t that something you can auction on ebay for charity..
I didn’t see where you said what books they were though…
September 18, 2008 at 7:52 pm #733004I don’t have a list but I could get one. I think the rescue will sell them however they bring in the most money. The A-Team has required a ton of resources, but that’s what rescue does; we give those dogs a chance who other wise wouldn’t have one.

September 18, 2008 at 7:56 pm #733006I would sell them seperately. They would most likely raise much more seperately.
Perhaps local auctions, or host an online auction?
Basically, get the word out to collectors like myself. I honestly couldn’t afford to pay you for even one of them currently, but I would have loved the chance if it was feasible. He is a wonderful writer! 😀
Perhaps he donated so graciously because he is always pictured with his golden retriever whenever possible. Stephen King loves his Wlesh Corgies too…He might be another to ask for donations of books for your cause? (I know I have seen him pictured with his dog in a calendar before. :))
I on the other hand, wish I could have one of the pups. I will admit, that is one of my favorite breeds of dogs, and I am an all out cat lover. 😉 But, I don’t know how well one would aclimate to a house full of 6 cats already. 😕 I hope you find them all homes, and that you can help them to love people again. I imagine by the way they were treated, they were most likely to become fight dogs themselves if they stayed where they were. People can be so cruel to animals, I just don’t see why. 🙁September 18, 2008 at 8:16 pm #733007I know Dean Koontz is very big into the Golden Retrievers..
he even wrote a book with one as the main character after one of his passed away… so I know he’s a big animal supporter..
I like his books.. and have all ove them so I doubt I would try for one that’s autographed even though it would be neat I would already have the book…
but I do agree an online auction would probably reach more people..
September 18, 2008 at 8:33 pm #733008That’s horrible about the dogs but at least now with you they have a chance.
I do know that both Ebay.com and Ebay.ca have separate sections for Charity Auctions. I don’t know the fees…but here is the link:

Watchers featured Einstein the golden retriever, and one of his recent ones, The Darkest Evening Of the Year featured a golden too.

I could probably never afford one of these editions, but let me know where you list them, I’d like to keep an eye on one or two of the titles.

Poor puppies… I remember some dogs coming into the SPCA that were like that (only with better coats, and they weren’t surrenders, they were born wild) that did the whole go limp thing, cower. They were about 8 months old, so there’s probably hope for your alaskan malamutes (not saying you own them) to be acclimatized to humans, since we were able to get them to be not scared (if not entirely happy) to be around humans. And they were heavy to carry too…
I hope the charity auction goes well!
September 19, 2008 at 1:31 am #733014Your best bet is Ebay. But I’ll bid 200.00 now for the Darkest Evening of the Year. 😉
