So, were you a naturally artistic youngster or is it something you’ve had to work hard on?

O_O me? oh my…uh….I’m shocked! I’ve been drawing for forever..but just got serious about it within the last couple years. I’d only done pencil work, and some minor pottery in school…then endless doodles in boredom. 🙂 I became a cake decorator and LOVED it…that was a few years ago now.

You’re gonna laugh at me, but where’d you learn to draw such gorgeous hair?

haha…Well, I only had one art teacher in school, but he was incredible at hair. He was an artist himself, more than a teacher, and that made alot of difference in how he taught. He taught how to do hair as a basic, sine so many things have hair, or fur…lol. Hair was something I particularly enjoyed doing as well..the hair he drew was a thousand times better than mine. He taught me alot of things.

He was actually a rather large influence in my young life…he was the first person who treated me like I was worth something. He actually stopped me from trying to kill myself by teaching me a new way to think, about life. He saw a rather large slash on my arm one day, I still have the scar from it…he took me aside and told me he knew what I was doing, and why. He told me to look at it like a jail sentence..and once I turned 18 I could walk away, and never look back, and never let anyone hurt me again. I’d never thought of it that way….to a person suffering so badly…the only thing you see IS the pain..and that horrible despair that you’ve never known any different..and if this is life, maybe it isnt worth going on.

I still keep in contact with them when I can…Sadly, because he wasnt really a teacher, but an artist put into a teachers position, they fired him when the schools were budget cutting, they also cut his wife, who worked at the same school. Not long after he developed a brain tumor…even more sadly…in the exact portion of his brain that functions when doing art…and he had to give up drawing and all art. They had everything taken from them after filing bankruptcy…and now live in their son’s basement.

Raines is his last name…and that’s where Vivacia got her middle name…Raine.

Bigger story than you counted on I guess….sorry. 😳

Do you still keep in touch with him? I have to say I never had a teacher influence me like that. It’s too bad you had the circumstances where you needed it, but also awesome that he was there for you.

He’s one of the best sorts of teachers–one that really cares about the subject they’re teaching and one that really cares for the students they deal with day in and day out… I wish there were more of them out there. My boys have been lucky to have teachers like that! Thanks for the story 😀

Yes, I do. They’re very special people to me. Now he spends alot of his time visiting with his granddaughter, whom he adores. 🙂 it really is a shame so much was taken from them, even his art, but he keeps such a positive outlook.

That’s an inspiring story, purplecat. I hope they have some wonderful things in store for them in the future.

Is Mr. Raines able to do any type of art work? and do you see him often enough that your children can be influenced as you were by his art and life outlook–even if he can just color with them?

I get to call them on the phone, but they live very far away now…and since he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I have not been able to see them. 🙁 He did have lots of prints, but I could not find any online, I will have to call and see if perhaps he’d want to try selling a few in my store…that would help them out too I think financially. it’s an idea i’d like to pursue. 🙂

Thank you for sharing the story, purplecat. I like hearing about – and learning from – other people’s experiences. 🙂
