I have been trying to identify this little fellow for a while now and I have came up blank…
He/she looks like a little bird of prey no more than 12 inches tall… and he/she sports shades of gray.
Any ideas or good web sites for info?????? 😀

IF I get any better pictures… I’ll post them! 😀
August 13, 2008 at 6:52 pm #728009Photos are too hard to tell, but I’m guessing from the size American Kestrel.

August 13, 2008 at 7:37 pm #728013If you ever see a gal walking around with a camera taking pictures of random things everywhere, it’s probably her. 😉
She takes the coolest photos. D:
EDIT: And yeh, “sparrow hawks” are a common name for American Kestrels.

hmm there’s lots of people that walk around taking random pictures…
not many people here are what you’d call ‘normal’
August 13, 2008 at 7:59 pm #728015I’d go with Sparrow Hawk for the moment… *off to find my bird watching guides…* 😀

August 13, 2008 at 8:19 pm #728016hehe…I’m glad there are better bird people here than me! I was no help at all! 😆
August 13, 2008 at 8:20 pm #728017Nope… not a sparrow hawk…
I have yet to see this bird eat another bird… it catches big bugs to eat. Smaller birds dive bomb these pour fellows all the time…
There is NO brown on the bird. Just shades of gray.
It looks more like a White tailed Kite but without the black on the shoulder of the wing…. (Yeah I know, that helps! lol)
August 13, 2008 at 8:48 pm #728018I think I found it!!! Mississippi Kite…
Picture off the web…
My picture
Ok… a web site had its “call” and it isn’t the same… DANG IT!… off and lookin again…
August 13, 2008 at 9:11 pm #728019Could it be a Gray Hawk? The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds says this…
Description: 16-18″ Wing span upto 36″. Small hawk. Pale gray above with gray-white barring on underparts, white rump, and three wide conspicuous black bands on tail.
Voice: A clear downslurred whistle.
Habitat: Deciduous growth along stream beds that have sufficient open space for hunting.
Range: From southern Arizona and northern Mexico, as far aouth as Brazil and Argentina.
I don’t think it’s a Kite; Kite’s are 17″ high. Does it have a notched, blunt or rounded tail? What is the feather patterning like? Banded, spotted? Might also be a Prarie Falcon or a Sharp-shinned Hawk – they are 10-14″ high. Hope this helps?
