One of the fosters I got yesterday has a nasty cold. Should have already seen a vet but hasnt. I can make the appt tomorrow but he/they may not be seen for a week or so. Does anyone know of any home/over the counter remedies? He’s got green gunk coming out his nose and he has spells where he heaves a bit. The little girl has some skin thing going on but since her brother had it too, I have some meds for that till she can be seen.
My vet recommended Robitussin, but only for a minor cold and coughing. When my dog had Kennel Cough, we gave him Robitussin and he was fine in a few days. He loved the stuff too. Yech! 😆 This sounds more serious than a minor cold, so I don’t know if it’ll work. If you do do it, give him a spoonful appropriate to his age, just like a person.
Are these puppies vaccinated for distemper? Gunk from the nose rings that bell, but it’s unlikely.
Sounds like an upper respiratory infection of some sort and I’d be leery of giving him anything OTC that your vet hasn’t recommended. When you call tomorrow for an appointment, ask them if there’s something you can give him to help get him some relief while you wait.
Always be very careful with advice on what medicines to give your pet, especially when it comes from the internet.
I’m with Rusti. I’d be very careful about giving them anything until they’ve seen the vet. They need to go sooner rather than later. Can’t someone from the foster group help out and take them to the vet for you, if you can’t make the appointment?
Vets are not open on Sundays, guys, and they were closed by the time I got the puppies yesterday. They have had their first shots and the lady who was fostering them before me runs the Hawaii Dog Foundation, so I dont exactly know why they have not seen a vet for this cold and for a follow up on the skin condition since the female was being trated for the wrong parasite. When the vets are closed, the net is the best thing I have for advice, so while it is not fool proof, I figured someone on here may know something since we do have vet techs and animal lovers on here. Thanks PDC. I heard the Robitussin thing before but didnt know the advice actually came from a vet. Thats reasuring. I will try that depending on how long it takes the vet to get me in.
Do you have any e-vets around you Ski? (I don’t know, I’ve never been to any of the Hawaiian islands 😳 ) Perhaps you can call them and get some advice to tide you over.

I’m well aware that the vet isn’t open on Sundays, which is why I mentioned ‘tomorrow’. His problem doesn’t sound serious, as long as he’s eating and drinking, he can last until you’re able to speak to the vet on the phone, at least.
I’m not a fan of giving any advice over the internet that doesn’t consist of “see your vet” no matter what day of the week it is. I also see some very dangerous advice offered by people who mean well, but know nothing at all about what they’re saying, and by the time I see it and advise the owner this is probably not a good idea I get “AND WHY NOT? You’re from the vet you just want my money!”
And then I see a post later on about how something happened to their dog (and they’re not sure what – they’ll never blame their OTC treatment) and thanks for the sympathy. And the vet hears a story about how the internet said to do this and that whatever the vet says is hooey.
Color me jaded and burned, been there, at the computer screen *and* in the clinic setting. Unless I have experience with an OTC treatment I’ve seen work “See the vet” will be all you’ll ever hear from me. Sorry it wasn’t what you seemed to be looking for.
Sorry Ski! I am too used to animal communities. E-vet stands for Emergency Vet. Vets that are open in some way or form 24/7 for emergencies, like human emergency rooms for when you can’t see a doctor because they are closed. 🙂

Yes, we have an emergency vet, but they do not fall under the list of vets that work with the HDF and therefor will be full price; Something the HDF cannot afford to do. I will not pay for this out of pocket as if I did that for every pup I fostered, I would be in the poor house in a week. None of these pups are in the best of health… they all have something wrong. Sorry guys, im miffed that this wasnt checked out before I got them since she has had this particular litter over a week… though im sure that this woman has alot on her plate… but I still feel thats no excuse and im still miffed.
Don’t worry Ski, I do the same thing if I have a pet question and vet isn’t open at the time. Even if no one is able to offer a solution, it makes me feel better to include someone else. What I would do is search for a dog forum and post your question, I use catforum.com cause well, my pets are cats 😛

I understand being miffed that it wasn’t checked out in the first place, but I still maintain, and will always maintain, that the internet is not the place to go to for armchair pharmacology. I’ve experienced far too much animal pain to be soft-spoken about it. Asking folks what they think it might be is different so you can gauge whether or not it’s an emergency.
If puppy is eating, drinking and seems more or less OK except for green goo in his nose and a cough, he’ll be OK for the next couple of days, and generally the vet will try to get a sick baby in fairly quickly. Some places set aside appointment times for same-day cases.
You might call the emergency place and ask if the vet can give you some advice on the phone to tide you over. Veterinary advice on the phone is still free in most cases.
