Most probly know i do not regularely rant on here, but this time it is really really something I am not dealing with well.
On top of other life stresses lately(you know, those normal anoiying ones that threaten your sanity) my lap top looks like it is it trouble.
I was having some issues with BSOD, assumed that it was because of a faulty update download of eather SP1 on an update right after it. well I have slowly been trouble shooting that. the BSOD does not really chap me too much. Should be easy to fix.
After trying to take off SP1 and it finaly showing that SP1 is not listed with the installed updates, I re-download SP1, then go to install it. Installing is fine, it prompts a reboot. Normal. I hit ok for it to Reboot. It does not Reboot. When it gets to where it should load up Vista, I get a black screen saying” Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix problem:”
then it tells me to boot with cd and run repair in order to fix.
It also tells me that Windows failed to load because the Kernel is missing or corrupt.
well crap.
I tried a repair with the vista cd. did not work. tried system restore from the cd. no restore points.
an eay fix to this would be to just reformat………
except i have photos on here that are not backed up. I could CARELESS about my lazy arse art…but the photos I took, I will be pained if i have to loose those. among them are ones from when i went to seaworld, my last whale watching trip where I got to see wild orca, my freinds graduation, as well as some more recent photos of sanfran/ Aquarium of the Bay>_< I am trying to find any way around this that does not result in a reformat. Like most people, I had not backed up these files.
Way to be a super dufus Koi.
Wo I am just slightly upset and having a bad day today 🙁
if any one has any advice on this/tips on where to look, I would be very greatfull.

I told my BF about it since he works at FutureShop, and he said that if you bring your computer at a place where they fix them, you can ask them to do a backup of your pictures, they have means to do it even if you can. That’s if your hard drive is not damaged. You can ask them just to do that and then you can try to erase everything after and reaload it all yourself.
Good luck! 😉
August 6, 2008 at 3:53 pm #726982never install windows updates… they always screw up the computer… I have automatic updates turned off and every time it prompts to update I deny that…
and my computer is perfectly fine… last computer I had, I did automatic updates and everything… and well needless to say that computer died after two updates…
also I have a friend that did automatic updates on her computer with Vista… and right after the last update the computer started doing a lot of really really weird stuff… so now she has to take it in to be fixed…
my friend calls it MicroS**t.. because that’s how it works… Like a big pile of poop

oh that is good to know! have at least that option is a glimmer of hope. The HD is stillintact and it looks like everything is there, Vista is just not being allowed to run. If i can at least get my photos backed, that is all i really care about at the moment.

yeah, that is how i got into trouble. I thought i DID have auto install turned off since i had it set to ask me first, but I found out that it would install when ever the lap went to reboot. >_< I finaly found the option for it to not do ANYHTING with the updates at all. PITA to the extreme.
August 6, 2008 at 4:25 pm #726985Wow, Vista sounds like ME (and that was truly a nightmare! 😯 ) I thought Windows had fixed these problems, that was one of the main reasons for the trumpets and fanfare at the release of Vista!
Koishii, I hope you can save your files. When you get your laptop fixed, please try to back up your data. I have an external hard drive and CDs because you can never have enough backups. I don’t have the technological know-how, but I think BDW is correct: your data is salvageable. I hope you get it fixed soon!

yeah, this has been a night mare so far. I really really hate all the frack that vista throws up.
I have an External HD and I was in the middle of getting ready to back up my new stuff. I was just trying to clean out photos that i did not care abiout first. so the good thing is that on a large scale, all my stuff is backed up. It is just some of these newer stuff that I did not back up. I should get a second External HD that i can use for photos only really.

nah… vista is a windows nightmare… when I send my friend emails… she has to go into something to convert it from my XP format to her Vista format… or she can’t even open the emails..
microsoft said they fixed this or that and blah blah… but it was actually worse… that’s why just about all computer retailers gave you the option of having XP on your computer or Vista… just about everyone I knew that got a new computer this year asked for XP and not vista… but I think it’s this month they are stopping that… so I won’t get a new computer until they get a new OS or I’ll just get a MAC…
August 6, 2008 at 4:46 pm #726988AnonymousUpdates themselves aren’t bad, but cramming 50 of them into a service pack is disaster.
You should always apply the critical security updates, or you leave yourself open to rooting if you’re connected to the Internet.
Don’t update drivers unless there is a specific fix you are looking for or feature of the new driver. That’s where most people get screwed.
Same with BIOS updates. Only for fixes to known problems you’re having.
Same with Kernels for Linux. Ouch, this one got me last week.

August 6, 2008 at 5:32 pm #726991AnonymousIf you have any kind of computer outlet store around, you should be able to pick up an external hard drive case. Cheap ones are $25, nice ones are $50-$60. The cheap ones might not do SATA if you have a SATA drive (just IDE), or will be USB only (no firewire or N-SATA).
But then you can put your drive in an external case, and hook it up to another computer or laptop and copy off the files you want.
Good tool to have around.

NICE! thank you snap!
While i am still seeing if i can fix the problem, these options are great to have, it is helping take the upsetness out of it.
It looks like that stupid SP1 package did not install completely and that is what Vista is having a fit over.
August 6, 2008 at 6:50 pm #726993I really didn’t understand anything you said, but good luck! 😀
