We have a Thai restaraunt here in town that we go to on occasion…but we’re slightly intimidated by the fact we havent a clue what anything is! What are your favorite Thai dishes? I know you like Thai food….so I figured you’d be the person to ask. 😀

This question should be in the “ask everybody section”, I’m sure we all got favorites!
Also a warning: a dish that is fantastic in one restaurant may be yucky, or different in another. They vary allot!
The standard so-called Thai dish we almost always get is “pad Thai”. It is soft noodles in a tasty but not hot sauce with chicken shrimp or whatever you want in it. Kids usually love it. I’ve heard that it isn’t really a traditional dish, but Americans like it.
My favorites are the very odd salads with combinations of apple slices, vegetables, and dried salted shrimps. And whole crispy fish, but that makes kids freak, unless they are the eat-anything types.
Thai food sometimes uses a mix of sweet and savory flavors together that can take you by surprise! One of our favorite Thai desserts are little round folded fortune-cookie-like things stuffed with sweet marshmallow sauce, onions and salted dried shrimp. Sounds totally gross, but WOW.
Another dessert not to miss if you ever get the chance to have it is “Mangoes and sticky rice”.. that is the best thing in the world!
What’s your favorites?
I’m thinking of other dishes kids would like: chicken satay is always good. Thai bbq chicken, and “pud se ew” noodles.
I can’t think of anything in a thai restaurant we grownups don’t like! Oh, except stay away from “fish maw”. yuck.July 5, 2008 at 5:13 pm #720593I really like Pad Thai too! But it can vary a LOT from restaurant to restaurant. I’ve had some really wonderful Pad Thai, and some terrible. Also some places make it spicy by default (I like it a little spicy).
Mango-anything in Thai food tends to be delicious!

I always have a hard time ordering because I’m afraid it’s gonna come to the table and be too hot for the kids. 😆 thank you for your suggestions! 😉

Thai Chicken salad is good too.. very spicey..
I don’t like the Pad Thai that I’ve had anywhere…
Wanton soup is yummy… and Pad Ci U… (they spell it different everywhere…
hehe..
Melody is totally right though… each dish is different at each restaurant… so it’s hard to order the same thing because it could be so different in each place…
July 6, 2008 at 2:58 am #720597I really love Thai food as well. A really amazing dish that I had at a local Thai restaurant was called Roasted Duck Curry (Fillet of roasted duck simmered in red curry, coconut milk, tossed with pineapple, grape, tomato, fresh peppers and sweet basil.). Haha…thank goodness for their website, otherwise i wouldn’t have remembered! 😀 KC and I just got back from the Thai restaurant, and I did see the Mango and sweet rice, but I didn’t try it. I wish I had read this thread prior to our dinner otherwise I would have tried it. For other desserts, they also have weird flavored ice creams. I tried samples, and they aren’t too bad. The flavors are Mango, green tea, and red bean. The red bean ice cream had a weird texture to it, but not bad. KC and his brother Lance didn’t like them though.
July 6, 2008 at 3:01 am #720598Before we moved from Washington State to Utah we were lucky enough to pick up the cook book from The Emerald of Siam, our favorite Thai restaurant. It has all our favorite dishes in it and we’ve been able to successfully replicate most of them. If you’d like, I’ll dig the book out and post the table of contents…
