So, the boys and I have been pulling down the urrrgly wallpaper in our front entry. Trouble is it’s not a small entry (it’s two stories tall) and the previous owners put the paper over raw, unpainted wall board… If we aren’t super careful the paper covering the gypsum on the wall board comes off with the wall paper… SIGH… (maybe I’ll go take pix of my little Windstone collection instead) After the paper is down the walls need to be textured and painted. Anyone wanna come and help?

July 2, 2008 at 4:02 pm #719423Eewww! My parents had something similar in the hall bathroom of their current house. Wallpaper over unpainted sheetrock. They’ve pulled the paper off (except behind the cabinet) and slapped a coat of paint on the walls. It has a wierd texture though because of the dried glue from the wallpaper (they were able to pull the paper off without having to steam it).
July 2, 2008 at 4:24 pm #719424Oh, wow, talk about drudge work! I hate wallpaper for that very reason.
The one time I tried to remove some, the gypsum came off too, just like you. So in my anger, I just painted over it! I know, I know, not the best thing to do. However, it was in the bedroom, and honestly, unless you glued your face to the wall, you really couldn’t tell there was wallpaper underneath.
Sorry, I don’t think you’ll get my help – not even sure you’d want it! 😆
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

July 2, 2008 at 5:41 pm #719427In our first house the builder wallpappered the kitchen in beyond ugly indescribable on unpainted sheetrock – we primed it then painted over it and it came out OK. Sold the house before it had to be done again so I don’t know what the next owner thought about it.
July 2, 2008 at 5:43 pm #719428Thought about just painting over it but it has a nasty vinyl pattern running all through it… blerrggg…

July 2, 2008 at 5:48 pm #719429I pulled off wallpaper once and found that the room I was in was once painted in bright pink and bright lime green….

😯 Maybe that’s why they wallpapered it. They didn’t want to have to try and paint over the bright colors.
July 2, 2008 at 6:05 pm #719431I hate wallpaper….our kitchen had an ugly conga line of ducks eternally cirling our kitchen when we bought this house…that was one of the first things to go! 😆
July 2, 2008 at 6:06 pm #719432everything in this house is very early 70’s with some unfortunate attempts at limited updating. None of the ‘neutral’ colors belong to the same color family; everything is just a bit ‘off’… but the house does have good ‘bone structure’

July 2, 2008 at 6:57 pm #719433I’ve never had to pull off wallpaper (thankfully) but you can always try sandpapering the wall when you get it off to even out the texture, use …. gee I forget what it’s called …. to fill the holes, prime, paint 2 coats (1 just won’t do it).
I’d offer to help but you are waaay too far away. 😆
July 2, 2008 at 7:42 pm #719434Just to be curious… what was so ugly about that wallpaper?
July 3, 2008 at 5:33 am #719435I helped some friends in Germany put up wallpaper once – what a nuisance! Our house doesn’t have it, thank goodness.
