Okay….putting a call out here for some help.
I have tried to find antiquing gel in the local Michael’s and the A.C. Moore stores in our area. I hit 2 different Michael’s and still the only thing I could find was a liquid, in brown, which is fine for right now, since the sculpt I’m doing is a brown base. But I would really like to find the kind of antiquing that can be mixed with a color for whatever color I’m using and preferably in the gel form. I had a bear of a time with this liquid the last time around, which ultimately ended up in my starting all over again on this griffin. πΏ
I have 2 other pyo blanks that I had no intention of using the color brown on. Can anyone suggest something online that can be ordered?
TIAAlright….NOW I’m pissed off. I finished that thrice-dratted griffin yesterday. Got him antiqued and sealed, all dry, and this afternoon I put him out on the hot tub cover and I was going to take some photos. In the meantime, I went out to feed the herd, and of course the next thing I knew it was a couple of hours gone past. I just went back out to get him inside, and what greets my eyes? A series of chips in the paint over an eye ridge and on most of his top claws. And I’m talking all the way down to the white stone. And they WEREN’T there when I put him outside. Nobody else is here to have touched him. So WTF?? AARRGH…..My husband suggested maybe he got attacked by a bird. I somehow doubt that, but….at this point, it sounds as good an explanation as any….And of course I don’t want to take pictures of him now.

I’m nearly done with the griff’s repaint, and I really didn’t want to go through another attempt on this poor guy. He’s been very patient with me so far, but I keep getting some very reproachful looks from him when I come home every day.
I’m starting vacation as of tonight, and I’m planning on getting him finished, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m down to just the wings left to paint, then it’s on to antiquing him…..hopefully with more success this time!June 28, 2008 at 1:58 am #718363sorry…I’ve never used antiquing gel…I just use paint…wish I could be more help. π

Make sure the paint is absolutely dry and let it sit for a day before antiquing. If you have a lot of detail and are worried about the antiquing taking some of the paint detail off, you can try to spray a layer of sealant on first, let the sealant dry, THEN do the antiquing. I just had to do it this time around after doing a bunch of feathers for a griffin I’ve had a bear of a time with. Worked like a charm and I didn’t have to back to redo the banding. Be careful that you spray in either a well ventilated, non-muggy room or outside when it isn’t muggy or humid out. Humidity can fog the sealant, giving it a misty appearance, because the moisture in the air gets sealed in with the sealant. Pain in the butt to get so far and have the clearcoat not be clear.
June 28, 2008 at 7:39 pm #718366Thanks, guys! I appreciate the input.
I’ve finished the wings on the first griffin this afternoon; he’s currently sitting out in the “studio” drying while I’m in the living room, trying desperately to distract myself while he’s drying. π π
Have I mentioned that I seriously need to practice restraint when using interference paints? I love the look of the darned things, but I’m afraid of practicing overkill. Which is how he ended up getting repainted, although that happened after I FUBAR’d him with the antiquing the first time around. After that, I figured what the heck; I’m gonna redo him anyway….might as well experiment now. πJune 29, 2008 at 3:12 am #718367pegasi1978 wrote:DecoArt Staining and Antiquing Medium is a clear gel that you can mix paint in to make your antique any color you want. This is just what I need also. I too had a hard time finding antiquing gel at my local craft stores. I found one that is in a tube, and is brown (probably the same kind tasgrs has). I need to get me some of this mixing gel though. Thanks, pegasi. And thanks tasgrs for asking this question! π

(Yes, I have done this myself. π π )I guess for some reason I thought I was the only one who referred to my messed up dragon like that. π But yeah, they are good for prctice. π

You’re welcome…glad I could contribute something. π
Actually, the stuff I’ve got is liquid and in a small plastic squeeze bottle. I’ve gone and CAREFULLY lightly antiqued the griff, and once that dried, I gave him a coat of sealer. That was this afternoon, and he should be dry completely by morning. He’s spending the night in the studio/sunporch and I’ve sworn to myself I’m NOT gonna go touch him until tomorrow. π Overall, he turned out okay, I guess. My husband, (who normally never comments either way on my artwork, the chicken… π ) actually said he thought it came out much better than the first try. He caught me by surprise on that one. I need to unmask the eyes and then I promise to take a few pictures tomorrow and get them posted. I did use a few interference colors, and I did make a mighty effort to not over do it. π He’s definitely darker than I really wanted him to be, but still…
I also started on my first kirin. I have an idea rattling around in my head that needs to get out. Have I mentioned those big scales are a freakin’ bear to get smooth with a brush? GAH! π Maybe I’m thinning the paint too much. I plan on giving him another layer of base coat color tomorrow to even him out……fair warning on this one, tho….I;m letting the color-beastie in me loose on this one. πJune 30, 2008 at 11:26 pm #718370June 30, 2008 at 11:31 pm #718371Oh no! All I can say is maybe be didn’t like the way he was painted and wants you to paint him again? Sometimes PYOs have a mind of their own.
June 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm #718372Oy….that sux….I’d be so furious. π‘
July 1, 2008 at 3:15 am #718373That blows! I undertand your frustation, but it’s a mystery to me why it would do that π . What a shame afer all that work, but hopefully you can fix him. PYOs, even ‘jinxed’ ones, are very forgiving π .
