so at first I did not think this was such a big deal. I mean cali has fires all the time, but over the past three days…wow. How are you holding up Bard?
well we have over 50 fires burning and the wind is pushing the smoke into the valley and then dying. The result is this:all that white is not cloud or over exposure from the camera..that is alllll smoke. and that is me. evidently my body doesn’t like it and today i was feeling very nausiated and dizzy..so i am wearing a mask to help. The smell is really bothersome too. I can’t really explain it because it has such a different smell to it. It is like a really hot day with LOTS of ozone. We are supposed to be getting hot and humid again…already starting to feel it, and that means more dry lightning….especialy with all this ash in the air. that is going to be interesting!
Looks like your family moved at the right time Chassie!
June 24, 2008 at 9:16 pm #717531Yep, it’s really smokey here in San Jose. That lightening storm started a lot of fires. Mike had said like 500+
It was quite a show though and I’m really surprised we don’t have any close to us. The smell is really bad.June 24, 2008 at 9:18 pm #717532I remember that kind of smell, back when British Columbia had a bunch of fires – we got the smoke and the smell and the ash in Valleyview (Alberta), the sky turned red and the whole nine yards! Being raised in a Christian home, I thought the world was ending…. π
Are the fires really close to you Koishii? And it sucks that the smoke bothers you… that can’t be pleasant.
June 24, 2008 at 9:23 pm #717533how are your ponies with all this soot in the air pheonix? I really had not realized how extensive these fires were till yesterday.
there is one fire close to us, about 40 miles away. I think that is where all the smoke is blowing in from for my town. My place is not in danger and every one here is fine, the smoke is just really anoying. My dad had to drive through it up in Sac and he siad it was thicker then fog and made him feel like he had asthma.
June 24, 2008 at 9:24 pm #717534Keep safe Koi, I hope you and your family get to move soon, I know you’re itching to be in Oregon…I hope those fires dont move your way. π―

we actualy are looking at listing on july first! and july 4’th we are going to go up and look at some homes.
Getting closer! you only have a few months to make sure things are ready for me!
June 24, 2008 at 9:32 pm #717536Ponies are fine. The Santa Cruz fire is the one that’s creating the smoke for us.
It’s amazing the amount of houses that have been lost compared to the LA fires.
Mike was out helping with the evacuations with the SO a couple weeks ago. He said it’s because the trees are so dense that the truck can barely get through.

June 24, 2008 at 9:45 pm #717538Oh wow! I am sorry about all of the smoke. I am not sure when these fires usually stop, but I hope it’s soon!

Sad.yeah, the santacruze area has an amazing forest. up here we have vast areas of dry grassland, so it ends up being the winds that can stir things up. that is a mess.

Wee still need to actualy get this house sold first, but at least the fact of getting it on the market and looking at other homes is a step closer.

June 24, 2008 at 9:57 pm #717541yeah, it’s really encouraging to see progress for something you’ve been looking forward to! π
June 25, 2008 at 2:22 am #717542I don’t think there are any fires (currently) close to us. (There was a small lot fire on the next street over on Monday; it burned about half an acre of dry grass. Thank goodness there’s a fire station just down the street: they caught it before it got into the big pastures on either side, and the barns and homes behind them.) But the smoke is thick as can be. My husband saw an Air Quality report this morning that showed Elk Grove as having the very worst air quality of the entire valley. π― There must be something about the local geography and the air currents that eddies the stuff into us. I’m doing OK, but he’s dealing with the double whammy of both a cold and smoke sensitivity. He’s not happy.
I’m nervous as a cat when I think about fires and all of the dry, dry fields around the house. I wish they’d put a moratorium on fireworks sales this year! I hate those things. They’re too dangerous when things are as dry as they’ve been. πΏ I don’t have anything against the big displays–generally the professionals know what the heck they’re doing–but I wish to God it would stop there. If the neighbors start screwing around with those things, I’m gonna end up spending the Fourth camped on the roof with a garden hose and my cell phone. (Only half kidding here.)

Unless they don’t check the wind direction, last year they blew sparks into my grandma’s backyard! Should have seen grandpa’s reaction when the firemen knocked on his door asking to check for fires in the backyard. He tore into the poor sod faster then most of us could have said “What?” π Kinda funny for us, not really for him…
