….was playing flag football with his Scouting group last evening. As he dove to catch the ball, he collided with one of his friends who was also trying to catch the ball. Micheal’s face hit the other boys’ knee, shattering the bones on the right side around his eye socket and collapsing the entire side of his face. The scout leaders got him to the hospital (he wouldn’t let them call an ambulance because he was worried about the cost). The emergency room was great. Seriously; they took one look at him and put in an immediate call for the pediatric opthamologist and plastic surgeon. He’s been in surgery most of the day. They think they’ve managed to save the sight in the affected eye though there is some trauma to the optic nerve. They are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery. The plastic surgeon said there wasn’t a lot of bone to work with, it was mostly dust. My mom got the chance for a quick visit and asked Micheal how he was doing; he replied with his usual upbeat attitude: “I’ve had better days, Aunt Kay”. He is barely 16. Please remember him in your prayers. He really needs them.

June 22, 2008 at 9:14 pm #716733😯 Oh No Beckie!
Let me know if there is anything I can do.
😥 I’m so sorry about this.
I’ll keep him in my prayers.June 22, 2008 at 9:28 pm #716734😯 Talk about bad luck!
It’s good for the eyesight, but terrible about the bone shattering…
It’s also great he’s got a sense of humour. I hope this doesn’t damper his liking for sports.
Hugs for him!

June 22, 2008 at 11:17 pm #716738Wow, what a major mess! Glad he is going to be okay in the long run though. My friend Lance went through a similar experience, but his collision was with a bul’s horns while rodeoing. He has metal plates replacing parts of the skull that were damaged, he too had some eye damage, but he’s in the army now, so they weren’t too bad.
Scary though.
