Ok… I am wondering if I boo-booed here or not BUT…
There was a baby dove that can kinda fly getting the crap pecked out of it by an adult dove. I caught the baby and now I have NO idea what in the hell to do with this little fellow…
My husband went to go get a bird cage from his dads…
I just couldn’t watch that adult dove peck on this pour little one. His head had a few feathers left on it…
What Do I DO?????? π

Or perhaps a zoo? You might call the humane society as well, and they’ll probably be able to help put you in touch with the right people.
Good luck!
May 26, 2008 at 9:08 pm #707712If he is eating, you can keep him till he is flying better. The bird sanctuary is your best bet, if they have one nearby. Or you can wait till the older bird is gone, then take him back outside. They are usually out of the nest at that age and should be on the ground, learning to fly.
May 26, 2008 at 9:30 pm #707713I think that I found a rehab place here so I will call them tomorrow and see what they say. All I want is this little fella to survive and be free once he is well.
This pour little fellow has been chased and pecked since yesterday.
There is another baby dove on the ground but the adults are not pecking the crap out of it…
I know its nature and such but I just couldn’t watch it any more. π
May 26, 2008 at 10:01 pm #707714I wonder why they were pecking it. π
May 26, 2008 at 10:07 pm #707715Not to sound harsh, but probably because there is something wrong with it and it may die anyway. The parents can sense stuff like that. Happened to a litter of kittens I knew a while back. Mom kept trying to kill one but the owners rescued it. It ended up dying later anyway. Had some kind of birth defect.
May 26, 2008 at 10:10 pm #707716I was wondering about that. Although with doves, I wasn’t sure. They’re not the brightest of birds. π
May 26, 2008 at 10:45 pm #707717No… doves are not that bright… π
Well if there is anything wrong with the fella and he passes then thats nature… I just couldn’t watch it get pecked to death. And why now instead of when it was a lot younger?
You can see on the back of the head where that adult dove was pecking it. π I don’t want to keep it as a pet. So I will call that rehab place in the morning. Hopefully they will take it in. They should know more than I do. π
May 26, 2008 at 10:47 pm #707718Aww the poor thing. He should do just fine in a few days. He looks ready to fly the coupe now, with all those feathers. π Kudos to you for helping him.
May 26, 2008 at 10:51 pm #707719Poor guy. Looks like a mourning dove, in which case it’s technically illegal to have (it’s considered protected wildlife in TX) — not that I blame you one bit for trying to save it, don’t get me wrong. His best bet is with a licensed wildlife rehabber. π

My art: featherdust.comMay 26, 2008 at 10:54 pm #707720do you have any polysporin? not neosporin that’s toxic to birds. But you can use some poly on his head.

No, I don’t. π
Right now its “resting”… hasn’t moved a lot since putting it in the cage. I just can’t wait until tomorrow so that I can hopefully find this little fellow some help! And the proper help. π *which means more than me!*
PetSmart here in town sells doves as pets… can’t remember what kind but I have seen them before in there.
