If you don’t care for the dragcave dragons and don’t want them to slow down your page loading, here’s how you ignore them without affecting anyone else:

      For Windows users:
      – Open Notepad (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad)
In Notepad choose File -> Open… and paste in this line:
      C:WindowsSystem32DriversEtchosts
      – At the bottom of the file add this:
      127.0.0.1 dragcave.ath.cx
      – Press Ctrl-S to save the file.
      – Quit Notepad.

      For Macintosh Users:
      See this page

Be careful with this file, if you mess it up, you will bust your Internet πŸ™‚

Not really. πŸ˜† I actually think this is a good idea. Just hate to lose clicks since this is the only place I post. I do try to go back through my posts and remove the adult Dragons for this very reason.
However you will not be getting pizza when I take over the world 😈

Nice to have the option. Back when I was on stone-age dial-up, I might have really appreciated that! πŸ˜€

First off, what’s a “dragcave dragon”? And secondly, is this something to do with all those fat dots in peoples’ sigs that occasionally show the “image loading/not loaded” icon?

Thirdly, can you explain a bit more about what the file we may want to modify actually does? What it is there for?

And should I not be blocking the site with my browser settings in preference to modifying a system file?

(Sorry. I’m intrigued, and when intrigued I tend to ask a bunch of questions to find out more.)

So basically this will only apply to the computer being used ? In other words if I added it to my file they won’t load on my computer when I bring up the page? But still load on any one who does not add it?

Sorry I’m a bit dense at the moment. Dang aliens are swiping the little Grey cells again. 😳

Yep it had to do with the fat dots that occasionally show the “image loading/not loaded” icon.

The site is an “adoptables” site where you can “adopt” and “raise” “dragon” eggs.

An altenative for those of you that don’t want to mess with your host file, if you’re using Firefox (if you aren’t, why aren’t you?) simply right click one of the dragon eggs, and click on “block images from dragcave.ath.cx”

Dragcave dragons are the little pixel eggs people ‘adopt’, put in their signature for fun, and then watch hatch. They have become so popular and overused internet-wide that half the time the images don’t load or are very slow to load because of the demand put on the originating servers…

The host file… well, here’s Wiki to explain better than I can:
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

It is a great way to block dangerous sites and advertisements on webpages, but as Snap said care must be taken if you take it upon yourself to edit it, else you done bust up yur intarwebs.

Because Firefox likes to freeze and I have to do a Force Quit. So I’m using Safari.

Hey, as long as you’re not using IE you’re good in my book! πŸ˜‰

Safari is nice. Firefox is good too, but I’ve not found a reason to use Firefox yet. Don’t get me started on Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. 😑

Hmm i’ve always had windows internet explorer both at work and at home… that’s what my lap top came with… works for me..?

The HOSTS file is used for applying static IP addresses to host names. Any website name listed in the HOSTS file is deemed to be ‘god’ and your computer will not check the Internet/DNS servers to see if there is an alternate IP.

127.0.0.1 is your computer, it’s called the loopback address.

By telling the HOSTS file that dragcave.ath.cx is at 127.0.0.1, your web browser is fooled into not loading the graphics from the web.

Blocking them with Firefox nets the same effect.

While I’m on this topic, I recommend that everyone downloads and installs the Microsoft MVP’s HOSTS file. They run a list of all the known ad/spyware/bad sites on the Internet and use the hosts file to prevent your computer from connecting to them. So in places where you’d see banner ads, you just get connection failure notices.

                  http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

It’s updated weekly, and contains a batch file that will install it quickly for you. Just download, extract, run HOSTS.bat, done.

Yeah yeah I know.. πŸ˜† but some people really get bogged down by them and I’ve been asked about it so I put the option out there.
