The electric rates for maryland have gone through the roof since they deregulated everything. My once under $100 a month bill has skyrocketed to over $300 a month! I had a turn off notice last month and had to pay them $500 to keep my power on. Now with this months charges they gave me another turn off notice. WTH?! I can’t keep up with it. I didn’t want to work overtime at work but with the price of everything going up it looks like I will have to. It sucks and the word is we will not be getting any kind of raise this year because the county can’t afford it. So the price of everything goes up and I’m still stuck making the same. We can’t even get a cost of living increase. Ok I’m done my rant, everyone else feel free to vent about rising costs in your area. I hate this economy.
April 27, 2008 at 3:24 pm #495209April 27, 2008 at 4:04 pm #693728I don’t suppose you’d feel any better to know that here in NJ things aren’t much better? 😛
Our electric bill here is always high–*usually* $300 or better, depending on the season. We don’t have the option of natural gas yet, so we have oil heat, (and that is a rant for another time, believe me. 😡 ) and the rest of the house is electric. Stove, dryer, hot water heater, 2 refrigerators and a chest freezer. We had 6 fish tanks, but as the residents died off, we haven’t replaced them, and shut the tanks down 1 by 1.
My husband and I both work full time jobs; mine requires me to travel off and on within our region. My vehicle before this job was an F-350 crew cab dually diesel truck. (OUCH!) When I started this job a year ago, I had no other choice but to pick up another car that was more fuel efficient. And I’m thoroughly glad I did what with the cost of fuel now. Our heating oil prices went from $2.69 up to $4.89 a gallon. So, you can add a few more folk to your kiss my butt rant. 👿April 27, 2008 at 4:21 pm #693729This is one of the times I do appreciate living on base in older housing that does not have billing going on so I pay no utilities (but they take the ENTIRE allotment of nearly $1,000 for rent, power, water and trash).
In the new housing they are starting billing and if you go over your allotment you have to pay. If you are lucky enough to be under your allotment you are supposed to get reimbursed, but I haven’t met anyone that lucky. Most people I know are having to pay out extra.
April 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm #693730I can totally relate! Our PG&E is minimum $400 a month. This is when we don’t run the heater or the AC. When we run the heater and the AC, it goes up to $700 a month 😯
We live in the Bay Area where rents and COL is reallly high. Even though we make pretty good money in comparison to most places, we’re in the same boat.April 27, 2008 at 5:14 pm #693731pegasi1978 wrote:This is one of the times I do appreciate living on base in older housing that does not have billing going on so I pay no utilities (but they take the ENTIRE allotment of nearly $1,000 for rent, power, water and trash).

Agreed! Though I’m in new housing, it’s overseas, so we’re not having to do the normal pay-the-rent business that new housing Stateside does. It’s niiice… though I’m hoping to move off base next January (once our one-year contract is over for this house), so will be back to paying rent & utilities. I’m afraid of what our electricity bill will be!

Sad thing is in my area if I were to live off post we would be making money as our other utilities (phone, internet, cable) would be covered by BAH/BAS.April 27, 2008 at 7:00 pm #693733Sounds like we are all having tough times and things don’t look like they are going to get any better anytime in the future.
April 27, 2008 at 9:07 pm #693734We’ve started to check how to use less electricy/gas. Keep the TV off; turn off the lights; wash clothes only once a week and use cold water if possible (my daughter is also learning that even is she wears a t-shirt for 5 minutes – barring accidents – she doesn’t need to put it in the wash); keep the AC higher in the summer, the heat lower in the winter (and wear a sweater); make sure the house is properly insulated. The previous house we owned, there were light-peeking cracks around the basement windows! Talk about energy waste right there; I think the first 6 months, we cut the bills in half simply by plugging all the holes. Have only 1 light outside in the front of the house, and turn it off before going to bed. Some of my neighbours have lights all around the house and leave them on all night (how can they sleep 😕 ).
I think we tend to waste a lot without even noticing it. Every little bit counts, because they all add up. Creating the energy costs a lot of money – this is why we should try to use it sparingly.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Things like the toaster, coffee pot, etc. Also, keeping your curtains closed keeps heat in the house, cuts down on your heat bill. Everyone’s right: the little things add up.
April 27, 2008 at 11:03 pm #693736Wow! I hope that price includes your heat! I am in a very large apartment here and my heat is included in rent but my electricity is only about $21-28 a month
April 27, 2008 at 11:42 pm #693737April 28, 2008 at 1:11 am #693738Isn’t any better here… water is going up *convenit since people will be watering their flowers and grass*… heating gas went up, gas at the pumps are high *at this point $3.53 a gallon and still going up*
When fuel goes up, food goes up since it is now more costly to ship it. And wages are the same. NO raises, NO cost of living help… nothing. 🙁 This sucks. 🙁 I wish it was better for everyone.April 28, 2008 at 2:32 am #693739I’m kind of wondering if the cost of gasoline/oil is the main root of the problem. Not saying it’s the only problem, but seems to be the main one.
When transportation goes up, *everything* goes up to compensate.
I wish I were eloquent enough to compose a letter to Congress and the Prez and remind them of a period in history where instead of sending jobs overseas because it was cheaper and handing out money willy nilly to ‘stimulate the economy’, the president *MADE JOBS* for people, he didn’t hand out money. Finding jobs for people will do more for the economy than simply saying “Hey, here’s $300 this summer just cuz you filed a tax return!”.
Sometimes I wonder if our elected officals (not just the president, but *all* of them) flunked history in school. It tends to repeat itself a lot.
April 28, 2008 at 2:45 am #693740Do you honestly think any of those politicians that where born with a silver spoon in their mouths and that do not have to pay for their own gas and have NEER had to actually work a REAL job a day in their life would really care??
