If it wasn’t for organ donors I would be without a husband and my daughter would never have gotten to know her father. I will be forever greatful to the donor and their family for giving my husband the gift of new lungs. April is national donate a life month (more info here http://www.organdonor.gov/get_involved/donatelifemonth.htm )
For those of you who are new and want to know what happened with my husband and his transplant here is a link to the thread I started back when he got the transplant call…..http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4725&highlight=lung+transplantApril 9, 2008 at 5:32 pm #688504The back of my drivers license says “organ donor” but I have been told you have to let your relatives and your PCP doctor know you want to do this or it may not be done. I am sure Purpledoggy knows a lot more than I do about this.
April 9, 2008 at 5:35 pm #688505*nods* I’m a donor and my family knows it. I figure if my organs won’t do me any more good, why not? Hopefully they can help someone else.
April 9, 2008 at 5:37 pm #688506My husband and I both are marked as organ donors on our driver’s licenses AND our military IDs. Probably need to remind our families of the choice though.
April 9, 2008 at 5:46 pm #688507I’m an organ donor too, and it’s in my living will, and my family knows. And of course it’s on my license. I think that if I were to die, someone else should be able to live. After all, what am I going to do with my organs and stuff? plus, I’m a universal donor, blood type wise.
April 9, 2008 at 6:18 pm #688508I’m also a donor. And Thank you for putting the thread here so I could catch up with everything that happened. 🙂
April 9, 2008 at 7:24 pm #688509I’m a donor, too. I figure that if it comes time for them to ask that question at the hospital, I can be reasonably confident that I no longer need said parts 🙂 My mother knows this, and she’s a registered nurse. I trust her not to freak out and tell the mediacal staff not to touch anything, like my poor dad might.
April 9, 2008 at 8:58 pm #688510I’m a donor too. Thank you for posting about this subject!
April 9, 2008 at 9:30 pm #688511My parents and I are donors too. :3

Yes even if your drivers license says organ donor it is up to your family to make the final choice. If they say no then they won’t use your organs. So if you are an organ donor make sure your family knows your wishes and will follow through with them. I’ve been an organ donor for years and my family knows my choice. I used to donate blood several times a year but I haven’t done it in awhile (I need to do it again). Also for anyone that believes the myth that paramedics and doctors will not work on you if you have organ donor checked off on your drivers license its not true.
April 10, 2008 at 1:52 am #688515I don’t think I’m allowed to donate blood since I have a thyroid disease (among other things)… not sure?
April 13, 2008 at 12:54 am #688516Today a friend i met on Myspace with Cystic Fibrosis passed away he was 36. He had a good 10 years with his transplanted lungs and got to do many out doors things he loved that he never would have been able to do otherwise . So if your not a donor or are thinking about it , think about the 10 years that Aaron got added to his life and that his family and friends got to spend with him . I know its not easy to think about you mortaity trust me i have been there , but if you can make life better for some one after you are gone doesnt that make it worth while ..besides a little part of you will still be alive.
