We keep having this reoccuring problem in our community with teenagers going door to door begging for money to go to college on a daily basis. They knock on your door being obnoxtious telling you that they arent selling anything they are looking for donations and for such and such a donation you get free magazines .. hence they are selling crap magazines.

The first time i told the kid that i had to work 2 jobs to afford school . He told me that work was too much and he wanted other people to pay his way ..i slammed the door in his face .

Then today i see them walking around my block again ( purple just told one off two days ago) so i hatched an idea. I took off my shirt and waited for them to knock . Eventually they made it to my door . I opened the door topless so they could see my ginormus scar. He said wow buddy what happened to you , i repiled ” I tried selling magazines door to door” .. he promptly ran off my porch ..i hate other peoples kids especially when they want my money πŸ˜›

What you did was hysterical and sometimes I tell the people who come to the door wanting to give me a different religion, that “No thanks, I am a Satanist!” just to watch them run down my sidewalk.

I have two takes on the kids going door to door….

Yes, it is aggravating to have kids knocking, and if they are not respectful, I have no problem with them sending them on their way.

In my personal experience, I haven’t found that most of the kids in my area act snotty. Most of the kids here are respectful. I live in South Louisiana. So kids here are usually taught to be polite. It is also very warm here.

So my second take is that, when a kid shows up all sweaty on the doorstep and they are selling cards, candy, cookies, whatever, and they are polite, I give them some money. I figure that walking door to door in 90 degree temps at 80% humidity is actually more strenuous than my job.

So in a way, I figure they are working. If they are out pounding pavement, they are doing something to contribute to their sports program, girl scout group or educational fund.

Unfortunately, most of the items they sell, actually provide very little money in the end. Most of these sale items are very bad fundraisers and the school or group gets a very small percent. The profits are eaten up with products, advertising and fees.

I would much rather donate my money to organizations who don’t give me free stuff and who spend little on advertising. You should all ask how much of the proceeds of whatever group actually go to the charity to help others.

I would highly recommend Heifer International http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.201470/ they have some great projects and great ethics.

Just my two cents…and by the way…I paid for all of my 7 years of undergrad and grad school myself, with no loans and I worked full time. So, I don’t think any young person should be handed and education. The thing that makes you do better in school and life, is doing it for yourself and sacraficing. I think it made me a better person.

It’s a scam. Groups of young-looking people go around the country, selling magazines, pretending to get the money to go to school. They are actually paid on commission and have no intention of going to college. That’s just their “sales” line. I know this because I met one of them once and dated him a few times. He was trying to recruit me to go with him and do it too. I guess they make lots of money because people are taken in by their “story.”

If it’s a neighborhood kid, and it’s anything but magazines, I would probably order something. But I know the magazine thing is a scam.

You and my husband would get along just fine! πŸ™„ πŸ˜† πŸ˜‰

My kids get fund raisers several times a year and I don’t let them go door to door. It’s too dangerous nowadays and people usually have their own kids’, relatives’, etc. fund raisers to buy from. I would rather just make a donation or pay for the trip/yearbook/whatever myself.

          Hehe….that made me chuckle!

I never let my son go door-to-door for fund raisers either. We have a reciprocity thing going on at work. We all bring the fund raiser stuff in and buy from each other. I guess that’s kinda silly when you think about, but it makes all the kids feel like they’re selling something. The best one we ever did was when we sold coffee for my son’s football team this past fall. I would’ve sold a lot more of that, if they’d given us enough time. I’d be happy to sell that again. πŸ˜‰

I’m the sponsor for NJHS and when we do fundraisers we usually do them at school, getting the money from the other students. When we do do larger scale fundraisers, it specifically says in the instructions now to NOT go door to door.
Back when I was in Girl Scouts, door to door cookie sales made up the majority of our profit. Except that one time I boothed at the Burbank International Airport. That was fun. πŸ˜€ They won’t let you do that anymore, though. We sold so well that the other vendors got mad and complained about us stealing their customers. πŸ˜†

Heheh I’m not the only one! XD I normally have my handy inverted cross necklace too, making sure to put it on before they get to my door lol.
I don’t believe in anything… so it gets really annoying when people try to make you believe.
Ever since my dad scared them off that last time, this whole block hasn’t had any coming around lol!

When I was in college I was part of a White Wolf World of Darkness role playing group (think vampires and werewolves for those who don’t know what I’m talking about). Every so often on campus there would be people standing near the major crosswalks, handing out copies of the new testament. I told my Game Master (the one who tells the story we would play) about it and he would joke about dressing up with fangs and such and having some flash powder in his hand so when the person would try to hand him one it would go “boom”. He never did, but I think it would have been funny to see the look on their faces.
