I don’t know why but growing up I always loved to smell things. I loved the bury my nose into the side of my horses neck and smell him. I loved the smells of the farm and outdoors. I like to bury my nose into the side of my cat when he is sleeping because I like the way he smells. I do the same thing to my husband when he is sleeping (shhhh don’t tell him lol). Now I like to smell my daughter when she is sitting in my lap. I just like to smell everything around me not just the normal stuff that people like to smell like flowers, etc. My husband says I’m weird because I like to smell everything. I mean people look at stuff all the time but why just use your eyes. I like to use all my senses to take things in and if I’m weird for that then so be it.

March 21, 2008 at 1:12 am #680911sometimes I like my sense of smell…other times i don’t. I work at a vet hospital and let me tell you…the things that some of these dogs can do in their kennels is not a pleasant aroma.
but flowers are nice! 😆
My most wanted list: Peacock kitty wizard, carnelian mouse wizard, copper patina frog wizard, autumn leaf poads, pumpkin spice kitties
March 21, 2008 at 1:18 am #680912My sense of smell is VERY strong as is my sense of taste. I can’t eat a lot of foods becasue of that like onions
March 21, 2008 at 1:35 am #680913I use my sense of smell all the time, and I too love to smell my cat and horses! And grass when it is freshly mowed, and I love jasmine and other flowers.
I associate a lot of things to smell. There are smells that really lift my spirits, and ones that remind me of my Grandmothers, or their houses. For some reason the smell of St. Augustine grass will take me back to summers at Grandma S’s…especially if there is a faint trace of orange blossums in the air too. Oh how I love the smell of orange blossums!
I use my sense of smell for cooking, and when I was a vet tech I actually used it to smell for illness. You can tell the difference between a sick dog/cat and one that is healthy just from smell, it’s weird. Same with people.
I do admit to getting a whiff of people who feel that bathing is optional isn’t a lot of fun though.
The other day at work I told my supervisor to check the machines for hydraulic oil, I could smell it. I was on machine number 5, sure enough machine number 2 had a leak. I’ve also been the first one to let them know something was burning up…preventing damage to the machine.
Smell is something a lot of us don’t use, which could be a bad thing. But I sure notice when Karli has filled a diaper, or when a child has placed something plastic on a heater, usually before it gets bad or sets something on fire.

March 21, 2008 at 1:36 am #680914I would like it a lot more if i wasn’t allergic to everything.
I would help but I am just to tired to get out of bed today~
Engaged to a WeaselMarch 21, 2008 at 1:39 am #680915I had the joy of smelling bo today. We had a homeless man who was assaulted buy his wife. There was a smell I could do without. I could always tell when my husband was getting a lung infection because you could smell it on his breath. It usually smelled like corn. You can also tell if someone has a GI bleed by the way they smell. Its a smell that you will never forget. So yeah your sense of smell can really come in handy if you know what your looking for.
March 21, 2008 at 2:34 am #680916I love the smell of babies! (Of course, your own baby has that perfect wonderful smell that no other does 🙂 ) and I love the smell of the outdoors, esp when you can smell it in your hair or on an animal’s fur, and horses, and coffee or fresh bread (mmmmmm).
Sigh…. good thread (except for the bad smells part 😆 )
March 21, 2008 at 2:40 am #680917You can smell if an animal is sick or not. But, I really hate the smell of fear. A really scared dog is pretty stinky and not in a good way. lol…..
But, I love the smell of my cats (not their breath, but, their ears are so nice smelling) I love the smell of grass but, I can’t be around grass since I’m highly allergic to every grass out there.
March 21, 2008 at 2:44 am #680918Most of my childhood memories are linked to smells. I loved the smell of my Gramma’s house. I love the smell of my cats. I love the smell of deisel fuel fumes, not the fuel itself, just the fumes…The smell of a new car with leather seats…
Whenever I smell Doublemint gum, I think of my dad. 😳March 21, 2008 at 2:49 am #680919BiPolarBear wrote:I would like it a lot more if i wasn’t allergic to everything.
I know the feeling! I have a very good sense of smell when my nose is not stopped up! Strong enough smells give me a headache.
While hiding somewhere in my head I'm on the lookout for white oriental dragons! Please let me know if you know of any available. Thank you!

There’s nothing quite like a parvo blow out first thing in the morning, is there?
On the other hand…puppy breath!
March 21, 2008 at 3:58 am #680921I’m a sniffer too! I love to snuzzle my cats, especially Emma, and babies, all babies, are my favorite, I love it when my nephews fall asleep on me, then I can sniff them to my heart’s content….mmmmm joy. I used to work at a hospital, and I could diagnose a whole bunch of medical conditions, by smell alone. And I’m with you on the GI bleeed thing PD, that is a very distinct smell, not to mention C DIFF, yark. I also know when it’s gonna snow by the scent in the air. I luuuuuurrrrrvvvv my sense of smell! Good thread, good thread.
March 21, 2008 at 4:54 am #680922I thought I was the only one who smelled kitties while giving them a nuzzle-I don’t feel nearly as strange anymore 😉 One of my favorite smells is the way the things smell right after a rain shower.
