So as I mentioned in the Sneek Peek Thread my show opened last night. I am the Stage Manager for Storybook (Children’s) Theatre in Calgary’s production of the Norse fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ It’s not very well known in NorthAmerica but some of our European members might know it or the rest can go look it up and give it a read π
This means that I have spent the last week (Tech Week aka Hell Week π ) busyer than sh@# doing paperwork, training backstage crew and other random last minute things. This all culmulates on opening night. The first night we have a REAL (as is paying) audience. Mostly everything went well. the only hiccup was when a light bulb in one of the theatrical lights exploded with 5 minutes left in the show, giving us a neat flashy effect on stage for a second and then scaring the crap out of me when it blew.
Then the cast and crew had a champagne toast in the dressing room (non alcoholic for the underage actors) and then all went out for a VERY late dinner/party
It’s a really cute show and so far the Trolls, which are Muppetish full body puppets that 3 actors wear and operate, and the Beast, which is a full body Bear/creature suit that an actor wears are stealing the show. When I pass through the lobby during intermission it’s fun to see the kids pretending to be trolls or wanting to go find the beast to hug him π
for those who are interested, our director has set up a facebook page for the show that has rehearsal pics and videos and will soon have actual show pics on it. search in Groups or Events for ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’

February 17, 2008 at 10:33 pm #666350“East of the Sun and West of the Moon” is one of my MOST favorite stories. I love the picture book I have that was illustrated by Mercer Meyer. I’d LOVE to see your production and from the sound of it, opening night had all the earmarks of a succesful run! Congrats!

I’m North American and I know it!!
Oh wait I don’t remember if that’s because I grew up with it or took too many courses in University…..
Hmm so maybe you’re right!! π
Wish I could justify the tickets to take Khym!! Just don’t think we can justify the ticket part that involves the Trip to Calgary, and hotel.*SIGH* Well at least not right now, maybe if he was 5 years instead of Months!! π Wait until his father discovers that I’d do that with/for him!!! π π π π
Well wishes and a bakers Dozen of Roses!!
February 18, 2008 at 1:36 am #666352Thanks everyone. I wish all of you could come too.
I love theatre, which is why I do this for a living π The show just keeps getting better. We had a great audience this morning and it’s official that the trolls have stolen the show. π At ‘autographs’ with the cast after the show all the kids have a million questions about the trolls and want to know why the trolls aren’t there (they are, just not in full costume. try explaining that to a 4year old)
We did show pictures and as soon as the CD’s are ready I’ll try to get some pics posted. I’m also doing the design for our show shirts.
February 18, 2008 at 6:30 am #666353Congrats, foxfeather! Let’s see pics.

When the Show’s done can I get one of those Trolls for Khym’s bedroom???
Nightmare’s what Nightmares??? Of course there’s trolls/monsters under my bed and in my closet I helped mom put them there!!! Think we’ll ever manage to have sleep-over parties for him? π
February 25, 2008 at 8:24 pm #666355ALl right, here are some pics!!! I should be able to get more when we do the ‘staged’ pics this week!
BACK STAGE
Alison – The Sorceress Gryla – I get to do her hair every show
Jocelyn – Advisor Nils – She plays a woman who is more like a man – I get to do her hair too
Sydney – Sister Agnes – She’s the youngest on the cast at 12 but she’s so professional about the whole thing!
Tricialee – Troll Princess Malmey, with the puppet head! and you can see CAmeron on the side who plays Finn and the Ymer toll face down on the table
Chillin – Patrick (Prince Harald), Erik (Beast) and Jennifer (Kirsten)
Random Beast and Kirsten Shots
February 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm #666356MORE!!!
You can see the ‘Ghost Orbs’ in these pics. The theatre is haunted. It’s an old Pumphouse that’s a historical landmark and over 100 years old. The original Pump is still there and apparently, still in working order!Erik goofing off in costume
Neat effect!
February 25, 2008 at 8:33 pm #666357Oh, I SO want to come and see this production! It makes me ‘homesick’. I wrote my own major in Uni; It was theatre, literature and art. I now live in an almost non-existant town in Idaho and I so miss my costuming, scene painting, lighting….. everything about it…. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing these pix. I’d love to see more!
