I got a new Gateway lap top because my old one is dieing. So…it comes with vista….but I want vista off and XP on…but vista is being a bit of a………..
well it does not want off.
two of my Tech savy friends have been trying to help me with it and it just does not seem to want xp on there.
i’d prefer XP because it takes less ram to run…and with art programs, that is a nice thing. I might end up having to stick to vista.so, while i am still trying to figure this out…my older lap top gets a Trajan downloaded onto it. YAY. I have files on there that i would like to keep……
it keeps spitting me windows of ,” download bestsellingantivirus to protect your computer form this threat”
It does not seem to be one that is meant to corupt files and destroy your HD. So until I get THAT problom figured out, I gots to use my new laptop.February 2, 2008 at 9:13 pm #494162February 2, 2008 at 10:17 pm #661155AnonymousCan you be more specific on the issue with installing XP?
My Dell laptops came with Vista. 25 minutes later they had fully functioning XP. I like the way Dell writes unattended installation drivers for their stuff 😀
But.. putting XP shouldn’t be a problem… unless your laptop is fully 64 bit.. which I honestly doubt. The only true 64 bit piece of hardware I own is my web server .. $$$
Run XP from the CD.. when it gets to the hard drive selection screen, turf any existing hard drive partitions, create one new one as NTFS (Quick), and go.

I tried to fix it, I couldn’t…. He took it to where ever. (I don’t know where, probably the guy that says “I fix any computer problem” Lets just say he got it off but, lost a bunch of programs including his email program.
February 2, 2008 at 10:36 pm #661157For the virus I would suggest getting Avira AntiVir (it’s free), put your computer in safe mode, run Avira… it should find and get rid of the trojan. I had a nasty virus in November that I couldn’t get rid of no matter what, but as soon as I got Avira it fixed everything right away. :3 (be sure to run it in safe mode with NO networking though.)

oh lawl. If it was so easy. I got a Gateway Gateway ML6720.
We tried the process you mention and it still failed to install. My friend tried a few different ways, we even used a DiskEraser program for the hard drive and still it spits out error on install for XP. From what I read on some of the Tech threads, this one is a real pill to try and load XP onto.February 3, 2008 at 1:40 am #661159AnonymousCan you list the exact error you are getting? Right down to the reference number if there is one.
February 3, 2008 at 7:02 am #661160Ack! I’m not that tech savy. Good luck though.
I have heard nothing but bad stuff about Vista. Why does Microsoft always release crap for the cost of gold? My last anti-MS run in was with Windows Millenium ME. (I still think Gates owes me some compensation for the time lost on that dang operating system.) 👿
February 3, 2008 at 7:11 am #661161Vista is a nasty program…I will do everything in my power to never have it on my computer, even if I have to go to Linex. Luckily we build our computers from the ground up, so when we upgrade, the drives are pretty much untouched, and we don’t have to change the OS.
MS also charges way too much for its products, and I don’t like how they play Big Brother with their programs, Vista does this, and it will lock up your computer or not allow certain programs to run if it thinks they might be pirated, even if they aren’t.
Add in all the extra ram stealing BS they included, and it just is more trouble than it is worth.

February 4, 2008 at 7:19 am #661162Vista is ridiculous. Good luck getting XP on, Koishii.
February 4, 2008 at 7:31 am #661163I’m terrified of this computer needing to be replaced eventually, because I absolutely refuse to get Vista, but I don’t know where or how I would be able to get XP? Besides, my photoshop isn’t exactly… *cough* …you know? XD;; And it wouldn’t work with Vista, so… yeah. ^^;;;
February 4, 2008 at 3:51 pm #661164I have heard NOTHING good about Vista and I also refuse to get a system that has it on it, that is why I am hanging on to my computer that is 5 years old now…

Whoot! Mine is going on 7 and it will probably be 3 more years before I can replace it. If you think about it, people like us are keeping a lot of computer junk out of the landfill.
February 4, 2008 at 4:30 pm #661166Oops… mine is going on 6 years soon… lol

Linux! Linux! Come to the good side! (I’m a Unix administrator… 😉 )
My next laptop will probably be a Mac. Expensive, but dang it, I can dual boot the thing and run Unix on it with Mac and Windows even! I refuse to go to Vista! I need to wipe my mom’s Toshiba to get rid of that cursed OS.
