WHY DOES ALL OF THE PRETTY PICTURES HAVE TO BE SO EXPENSIVE!! 😥
To be more specific, I am talking about the Tom DuBois prints which depict the Noah’s Ark scenes. “The Celebration” “The Commission” “The Invitation” and “The Promise”.
I want to buy these four prints, but I don’t want them to be too small (like an 8×10) and I don’t want them signed or anything, but they cheapest I can find them is for $45.00 each. If I were to buy them for that price it wouldn’t be too bad, but then I have to buy the frames for them, and that together can be really expensive.
Haha-I just thought I would vent. It might make me feel better!December 28, 2007 at 6:29 pm #493787December 28, 2007 at 6:38 pm #650724Well the artist has to make money so they can keep making art.
December 28, 2007 at 7:02 pm #650725Those prints have so much staggering detail a 8 x 10 wouldn’t do them justice at all! They’re wonderful!
But I quite feel your pain about how framing (especially custom framing) can cost far more than the print! 😕

If you can afford it, support your local framer. Many are struggling to survive! If you cannot afford your local framer though (and I do understand), you can try places like http://www.americanframe.com. Their econo-wood and sale prices are really pretty good for custom frames.

I support my “local” framer, Mr. Ed of Ed’s Frame Gallery, in Montgomery, AL, and he does a WONDERFUL job! He helps you pick the matting and frame that will work best with your artwork and then does a quality job. He even uses coated wire, puts a piece of paper on the back to help protect your walls and provides good hooks for hanging your pictures. He even gave my husband and I a gift certificate as a wedding present and honored it when we finally had a chance to use it almost four years later! I don’t know if he does it with anyone else but with me he always plays a game when I go to pick my pieces up of making me find them on his walls. He also gives me a chance to guess what the final total is and if I get withing 5 to 10 cents he says he’ll give it to me free. I’ve been close a couple of times, but never that close so I don’t know if he’s serious or not.
I did use the framer local to my parents one time, but after seeing their work compared to Mr. Ed’s I was less happy (no coated wire or paper backing). I need to check out the local framers here in Hinesville to see is any of them compare to Mr. Ed.
December 28, 2007 at 9:38 pm #650728Going to your local framer is great… helps them stay in business and helps the local economy! Plus you get to see, in person, what the different colors mats and frames will look like on your artwork before committing to purchase! 🙂 I think this is really important, as setting the art in the right color mats and complimenting frame can change the way it looks. And if you are gonna frame it for yourself, best do it right the first time… after all you are going to be staring at it for YEARS! 😆

December 29, 2007 at 4:41 pm #650730Hmmm…I don’t know where I would find any local framers, but again I was just sharing my frustrations. 🙂 Thanks for reading it!
December 29, 2007 at 5:49 pm #650731If you have some place like Michaels, A.C. Moore or Hobby Lobby they typically offer custom framing. For a “mom and pop” frame shop that isn’t part of a chain I’d check the yellow pages in your phone book (in mine they are under Picture Frames – Dealers).
December 29, 2007 at 10:09 pm #650732Has anyone had framing done by AC Moore or Michael’s? If so, were you pleased with the results? I’ve always used the art store in the mall….
December 29, 2007 at 10:50 pm #650733I’ve had my James C. Christensen and Scott Gustafson prints framed at Michael’s. They always do a great job and generally have some kind of coupon either in the store flyer or the newspaper. I think right now they’re running a ‘frame on get another 1/2 off’ at the moment. Sometimes it’s been ‘get one framed and another framed for a penny’. Hope this helps!

December 30, 2007 at 12:04 am #650735I am lucky, I goto my ex father in law to get anything custom framed… 🙂
December 30, 2007 at 2:07 am #650736My parents had a counted cross-stitch project framed for me at Michaels one time. They chose a rustic, weathered wood frame and when it was out together the framer didn’t make sure the insides lined up properly, so after a while the glass cracked. It didn’t help that the cardboard they stretched the project on was too thick as well (think something like one of those tri-fold boards you would use for a science fair project display). I ended up taking it to Mr. Ed later and he routed out the inside evenly, re-stretched the fabric and got a new piece of glass as well.
