As many of you know-I have two dogs: Karly (the oldest, and a mutt) and Keely( the youngest and an american bulldog).

Karly eats Keely’s poop!! It is absolutely disgusting, and I need some advice as to how to stop her from eating it. I know she doesn’t eat her own poop because the backyard is littered with her own and not Keely’s.

I have read to put pineapple in their food, but how much and does it need to be fresh?

Fortunately, Keely doesn’t follow that bad habit!

There is a product you can get from your vet called For-bid and you sprinkle it on your dogs’ food (I’d do them both, just to make sure). It’s supposed to make their poo taste bad (as though I can’t imagine that it doesn’t already…).

It generally solves the problem right off the bat. On occasion, like most things, it doesn’t work, but sometimes it’s as easy as sprinkling the powder on their food.

Contact your vet and ask about it!

usually it has something to do with a nutritional imbalance…

I think we had to give our dog a supplement…and sprinkle that stuff Rusti was talking about..

but that was a long time ago…I agree with Rusti about calling the vet….

Sometimes, as gross as it is, it really does just ‘taste good’. My dog raids the cat boxes for cat box cookies at every opportunity if I’m not watching her.

The theory behind that one is that cat food, which has more protein than dog food, tastes better and some of it doesn’t get fully digested on the way through. So, good tasting bits of cat food on cat box cookies, dog goes for it unless I keep her out of the room with the cat box.

For us at the vet clinic, it really was just kind of a gross habit and looked no further than the For-bid to stop it unless there was some other symptom. Dog kibble is pretty well balanced nutrition-wise!

Pineapple does make the poop taste really bad. I used fresh and it only takes a couple of pieces in each meal for a few days. Then the other dog will get the point. It’s also cheaper then those powders and stuff you can get.

Sounds like Pineapple actually works too

I might just call the vet and try that For-bid stuff. But I might try pineapple before that. It’s so gross that she does it! I am not sure if she is lacking nutrients because she seems to like to eat anything that has bodily contents in it. For example, if I leave a used kleenex on the coffee table when I leave, i will come back to find it torn to shreds. It’s the same reason why I have to close the bathroom door before I leave because she likes the contents. Icky.
The poop is the worst though. πŸ˜•

Sounds like normal dog stuff. My own shepherd will eat used kleenex, and so does my parents’ setter. We had to get garbage cans with lids for my parents’ house when we got the setter because he liked to dive in the garbage in there too.

              Blech indeed!

While watching cable (Animal Planet “Its me or the Dog”) I have learned that some dogs eat their poo because they woof their food down so fast that it doesn’t digest very well that the poo taste good… EW! The pineapple apperntly works very well.

The name of this topic should have been “Don’t Read While Eating!”. πŸ˜†

Ya learn something new every day, though….

I like “It’s Me or the Dog” and “Divine Canine”. It’s great to see people getting help instead of giving the dogs up, esp. since they “trained” the dogs to misbehave.
