I’ve been on light duty at fire department headquarters answering the phones and I’ve recieved two calls from people asking about solicitations. The career firefighers in this area DO NOT solicit from people but someone has been calling saying they are collecting for the various career stations in this area. They have been telling people to leave either cash or checks under the doormat and write it out to the fire department but on the back of the check write “for deposit only”. It makes me so mad that people do this kind of thing. Luckily the police hq is in the same building so we are trying to get this all fixed but man I just can’t believe some people.

December 11, 2007 at 2:10 pm #644718Tell me about it, my husband won some African lottery just last week.

He couldn’t have. I won that one. π
December 11, 2007 at 2:16 pm #644720I guess that means we have to share the winnings π
December 11, 2007 at 2:17 pm #6447213 ways. I won, too.
December 11, 2007 at 2:33 pm #644722Ah, that’s okay, I’ve won a million, and about 30 ipods, don’t forget all those laptops….. π π Oh, and I’ve won many free trips to Florida with a Bahamas cruise, and weekend trips to Georgian Bay.
But, seriously scammers are just awful. People need to think things through. But, not everyone is trying to scam people.
I had one person who gave me the third degree for trying to sell her tupperware. And, I wasn’t even selling, I was calling to see if they had any damaged pieces that could be replaced. (If you don’t want a sales person to call then don’t fill out a ballot and leave the don’t call me option unchecked. π )
December 11, 2007 at 2:59 pm #6447234 ways!! I won that lottery too!!! π
December 11, 2007 at 3:08 pm #644724Over here, it’s the Spanish that gives away millions on monthly basis. That and Reader’s Digest.

Ah geesh! I got you guys trumped. π
I had a lawyer from the UK asking for my help to help out a widow get money from her husband’s bank account (who just conveniently died recently). Of course, if this doesn’t work out, I know I won some international lottery. Gotta find the e-mail with the contact information…… π
December 11, 2007 at 4:26 pm #644727I don’t like con artists either… And it saddens me how they often use different kind of officials and public services as bait, just to get poor people fooled. I can’t deny that it’s the easiest way for them, though. People tend to react to officials in a certain (respectful) way and, thus, get easily fooled when a scam occures.
December 11, 2007 at 4:30 pm #644728When I get a phone call from someone soliciting donations I always tell them I never give to anyone who calls me on the phone and say goodby

Yeah, everyone should do that, or at least ask for something that would prove their cause actually true. It would decrease the chances of getting scammed.
I never donate, even face to face, so I have had no problems so far… But we’ll see what’ll happen. -
