I feel really really stupid about this. I am not sure what i was thinking when mom and I were looking at cat things the other day in the store.
We were looking at flea medicines for the kitties, and being it had been a while since we got drops for them, we were looking at the OTC. I am not fond of the flea drops. there is something about it i just do not like. So I was real happy when I saw this:
http://www.sergeantsnatural.com/
An all natural solution for fleas. the contents are all things I know of:
# peppermint oil
# cinnamon oil
# lemongrass oil
# clove oil
# thyme oilStill a little skeptical, but why would they sell something natural that is harmful to cats? so I thought it would be safe to try and if i did not like it, then that is ok.
After posting about my big kitty, i just wanted to look up the website to share this with Bardwing, i was curoise if she had heard of it yet. But what I found was forum posts of pet owners who had used the product with terrible resualts. some animals even died. I was kind of concerned over this, so I did more digging until i found one post, a lady who almost lost her cat found out by research that pepperment and thyme oil is toxic to kitty’s, and oils in general are hard for their liver to handle.
I looked this up my self to find more then one aroma therapy website warning that pepperment oil and thyme oil can be deadly to cats.
All of my cat’s are safe. one foamed at the mouth for a minute, and one drooled a lot…but all of them are normal now and i am keeping a close eye on them.
I can not believe I put them at such a risk though! 🙁 I feel so bad, and i feel taken advantage of! What if one of my cat’s had not been able to handle the oils and died?(a lot of them died of liver failure and has seizers right away)
I feel so horrible that i bought something toxic to cats and put it on them… I am looking up holistic ways safe to cats for thier fleas after this oil wears off.🙁

so far all of them are acting normal.. yuh, at least now i know that you really need to research things. I just can;t believe they would sell something like that!
December 10, 2007 at 6:07 pm #644008Sergeants, Hartz, Biospot etc are all very dangerous and better not used on your cats. They can cause seizures, skin problems and even death. And they don’t work. Clove oil is also really dangerous if ingested.
As long as they’re ok now, go ahead and wait the month for the spot on stuff to run its course, go to the Vet and get Frontline, Advantage or Revolution for your cats. You don’t need a doctor’s appointment, they can just sell it to you without an exam.
These products are effective, safe and have a guarantee. They may be more expensive but they won’t kill your babies. I have far too many horror stories from seeing what happened when those OTC products are applied.
December 10, 2007 at 6:39 pm #644009that is what i was reading about, and there is no warnings on the boxes that these drops can cause death…. I just feel like the stores are selling poison to pets! there would be outrage if it was kids instead of pets. we have 10 cats though, so it is hard some times to buy flea medicines for all of them.
December 10, 2007 at 7:05 pm #644010Geez thats terrible 😮 I am glad your kitties are ok though. How scary!
December 10, 2007 at 7:13 pm #644011If you need me to post the cat dosage of frontline, I can, or you can pm me. My vet showed me that you can buy one box of the big dog frontline and then I empty it into a blood vial tube and put the stopper on. Then I draw up the dosage for the weight for my cats and dogs with a small syringe.
It is much cheaper and it is the same frontline for both cats and dogs. If you have a helpful vet, he will show you the same thing. My vet knows I rescue and he is very helpful at helping me save money.
December 10, 2007 at 7:14 pm #644012Oh Koishi, i know how you must feel! Please keep us posted on your cats! I really hope they are ok! I am sure they still have lots of lives left!

I’m glad you brought this up. This is how we’ve been doing it for the past 6 months. I have 8 cats and every bit of money saved counts.
December 10, 2007 at 7:37 pm #644014My Cats know the sound of frountline being opened i hate putting it on them because the hate me for the whole day!
December 10, 2007 at 7:40 pm #644015I open it in my workshop and then put it on them while they’re sleeping….Kashka actually snores when she’s sleeping. Does anyone else have a snoring cat?
December 10, 2007 at 7:46 pm #644016Both my cats snore. And so does my bf 😆 So when I’m in bed, I have snoring coming from both sides 😆
Koishi, did you contact the store or site where you bought the oils? I certainly would, tell them that they are carrying a potentially lethal product. And that you would have sued them if your kitties had died.
December 10, 2007 at 7:49 pm #644017If it’s a larger store they may not be able to control what they’re sent. Some large stores like WalMart are sent things based on the purchase rates by a home office. I think these things need taken off market entirely…how does someone go about making a company stop producing a potentially lethal product? 😕
December 10, 2007 at 7:50 pm #644018We have one cat that snores quite loudly. lol We try to apply the Frontline while they’re sleeping, too.
