Question for Nam: Collections?

Is this for Melody or Nam AKA Jennifer???

My entire Windstone collection is rather small, and they are all boxed up ready to be moved! Ack! I’m afraid they won’t see daylight again until we can get a place. That might be a month or three. I’ll take photos when they emerge once again!

I also collect lots of dust (comes with owning parrots), feathers, stones (including gemstones, polished stones, random stones, fossils, etc), any dragon that appeals to me, art supplies, feathers, did I mention dragons…?

I try to collect Geocache visits too but that’s on hold until we are settled once again.

I’ve geocached once or twice… the giant metal horse in town has one in him… don’t remember what he held… a diamond ring or money … don’t remember which… but here is the official webpage for info http://www.geocaching.com/

Basically. You get “directions” to the area where the “prize” is… but you have to search for it. Like I said, we have a big metal horse in the middle of town (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/Parano/wackyhorseeastwood.jpg) and he either held a diamond ring, or money (don’t remember). The case which held the “prize” was buried inside him (that black area on his side you see in the picture… way in there), so that’s the catch to finding it. You only get general area directions.
Once someone gets the “prize”, there is a piece of paper also in the case that you write the time and date and stuff on it.

I’ve only done it a few times, but that’s the basis’. Any cacheing “seniors” feel free to correct me 🙂

Geocaching is essentially high-tech treasure hunting. You create a membership on the website and you can look up caches near you. The site gives you GPS coordinates to the cache, and you need to put those into a handheld GPS unit. You go out, find the cache, sign the book and mark that you found it! It’s fun.

There is sometimes a “First to Find” treat. Anyone can place a cache as long as they follow the rules, so a first to find prize can range from anything, depending on the person’s wealth or lack there-of. Some people do put grand things in them such as money or valuables. Most do not… but usually it’s something neat like perhaps a collectible coin or a cool toy.

There are different sizes of caches… from ‘micro’ caches such as a film canister, to large ones such as bins or buckets.

The micro caches are small and only contain a small log book so you can sign that you found the cache. Micro caches are popular in areas where it’s impossible to hide large objects, such as in cities.

Larger caches contain a log book so you can sign, but they can also contain trade items. First to Find prizes are sometimes nice things, but after that anyone that finds the cache can trade items. Bring something, take something. This can range from simple things such as pens to things such as t-shirts, or really whatever as long as it’s safe and fun (and family friendly!). One of my favorite items I’ve found was a fish shaped bottle opener. I left a light up yo-yo for that one!

There are also ‘trackable’ items such as travel bugs. These are an item with a special code attached that allows the owner to track where it goes. If you take a trackable item, you are not allowed to keep it, and you must place it in another geocache to help it along its way. I have one and its gone 1277 miles so far!!

I’ve only found 26 caches so far (not too many) so I hope that as soon as life calms down again we can seek more!
