I havent done a lot of PYOs at all. A muse, a kirin and now the griffin. Let me give you a little back story on why I chose the color scheme I did. I grew up in NY all my life. Mom and I were very big on feeding the wildlife in our backyard, which was considerable. We had over 12 ultra large bird feeders with so many birds, the feed needed to be refilled each day (not to mention the squirrels that loved to jump the line and try to get onto them).

As soon as it started turning cold enough, usually around Halloween, our favorite birds would show up… Cardinals. We LOVE Cardinals! And, against the gorgeous white snow, they always stood out and were so brilliant. We had a lot fo them and there was this one family of cardinals that actually befriended us more than any other. They always brough their babies by and they would eat out of our hands. The male was particularly friendly and he would sometimes even perch on our shoulders.

When I moved to FL (and mom many years later), we felt as though we lost our typically northern birds. In fact, until mom moved to FL, in the years Id lived here, Id not seen any of my beloved cardinals, figuring that since they always showed up for northern winters, that they didnt like any kind of heat. But mom moved to central FL and when I visited her, she was thrilled to show me that there was a cardinal family that frequented her backyard! Now that I live in central FL, I have seen them too. Today there are 2 cardinal families that hang out in moms backyard and of course, she has tons of feeders out. They seem to hang out all year round.

Like I said, they are our favorite small birds. Mom really loves to sit and watch them and remember times we spent when I was a child growing up, etc. So, among one of the things Im giving her for Christmas, I decided to paint her a PYO Griffin similar to a cardinal! Ive always had a hard time blending and the photos here do not do this PYO enough justice. My blending worked out very well if you saw it in person (plus, Im better with feather textures). The flash washes out a lot of the blending and makes it look shinier than it really is. I finished him in a matter coat and he isnt that shiny, and is more detailed. Maybe one day soon I’ll take him outside and take pix in natural light.

So, here are the photos! I hope you guys think I did OK! For my skill level and lack of PYO experience, I am very pleased at how he came out… and Im usually a nit picker and perfectionist so I know when Im happy, that for me, it must be good. Im sure mom will love him… and if she doesnt (or cant find a place for him), I might keep him or may have to send him to eBay. But Im really hoping she will love him.

Nice, PhoenixTears! He sure is bright and cheery.

Thank you! He’s not so bright in person, but he is representative red of a cardinal. He is blended with maroons and darker umbers.

Very nice job, I’m sure your Mom will love him… πŸ˜€

How cool that that cardinal family befriended you.

          Hi PhoenixTears,
I have yet to buy the finishing spray and I was wondering what brand you use.

            Looks GOOD! πŸ˜‰

I have some cardinals around here… I had a nest in my backyard BUT I think a cat got the momma because one day she didn’t ever come back and she had eggs… πŸ™ But I see them around here every once in a while.

Oooh! I looove him! Cardinals are sooo sweet! You ought to do another one in female cardinal coloring so you can have a set! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

He does look like a cardinal! I got to see my first one in St. Luis when my brother got married. πŸ˜€

Not only will your mother love that griffin because it’s beautiful (well done!), but she will love it because you painted it. It will remind her of you and the times you had with the cardinals while you were growing up, just like it reminds you of her and those times.

I love cardinals. We have some that come to the birdfeeder outside of our kitchen window. The female is particularly pretty, but would be harder to paint. I should try it sometime. πŸ˜€

                  Hey sweetie-
I use Krylon Crystal Clear, Krylon Matte Finish and Krylon Satin (if I could find that bottle)! He was done in matte finish and isnt as shiny in person. And, a little at one time, goes a long way (and the spray has a long reach too)!

And local Walmrt store carries it very inexpensively.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. What was freaky funny is that I did most of this in a hazy sleep trance! I dont remember doing half of it! I know I did because Anthony told me that he would get up at 4am and see me in the office painting away. Well, I guess if youve got to have insomnia, it’s best not to remember it! Plus, my peak creative hours are in the early morning hours between 3 and 6am. Thats usually when I painted. As long as Im pleased with how he came out, thats what I care about.

Like Emerald said, my mom should likely love it because it was done by her daughter. Oh the horrendous things I gave her over the years growing up that she put on the refrigerator or counter and coffee tables. Some were scary! She still has a painting of our loooong passed on Siamese cat Tippy, I did in 1987, hanging above one of her arch way door s in the house. It’s not bad but pathetic enough (acrylic on canvas… I was better at doing unicorns, pegasi and horses than any other animal).

I remember I did a huge rearing bull bust in red, maroon and umber coloring (like this cardinal) but it wasnt representation in that it didnt have facial features. Acrylic on canvas again- I did this for my father because I was SO proud of him when he finally quit drinking and went dry in 84. The bull representated his strength and all he had to do through each day to continue sobriety (tho after the initial “Im not drinking anymore”, it was easy for him. There is a long story behind this but I wont share here or now). What really sucks is that my step-monster (everyone hated this gold digging brat; theyre long divorced) didnt like that my dad got it framed and hung it up (in HIS space). She took it down and threw it away! !!**&#%#%@&*!!!!*#& PFFT!

The woman my dad is with now is most terrific. But, I dont think they would go in for anything mythical or appreciate a PYO- which is why I wont do one for them. I’ll stick to mom for now and if I ever get any better, maybe I’ll sell a few on eBay (if theyd even sell). I would try a female cardinal griffin but I think it would be much harder. Plus, mom would want the set. We love the birds overall, but we really, really favor the red male cardinal because of the mesmerization it brought us when against virgin snow. If I ever get good (ha), possibly I’ll start making sets.

BAH! Shut me up! Sorry and thanks for reading!

You did a very good job on that griffin. He does have the coloring of a male cardinal. I’m sure your mom will love him! πŸ™‚

I miss watching the birds off the back porch at my parent’s house. The cardinals we had always seemed to show up in the evening, right before it got dark. They really are beautiful creatures… and one of my favorites too.
