Ever had one of those days turn into one of those weeks and you just want to crawl back under the blankets and hide?
I have Fall allergies – mold, mildew- not a problem when we lived in MI. We’d get a good hard freeze and problem solved. In fact I didn’t even know I had them til we moved to GA. No Fall freeze and I kept getting worse every Fall. Any way this year was going well, the only good side of the drought, and than we got just enough rain to trigger them. That went into Bronchitis and than a nasty Sinus allergy. Can’t take all the meds they want me to for that as I’m scheduled for two epidural’s on Mon ( one on each side of my lower back) and some things just can’t be in your blood for five days beforehand.
My Mom called to let me know that my Grandma has taken a turn for the worse and will probably not make it through the weekend. Not unexpected but still hard. Especially since I can’t be there with my Mom. I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers there but you know how it is with us oldest girls. We know best ;-}
So I was already feeling down.
Than last night our neighbor shows up to inform me that if one of our dogs steps a foot off our property and he is anywhere near he is going to shoot it. They have a Rottweiler and three wiener dogs. One of the little dogs was hit by their car and broke a hip some time ago. They just let it heal at home. The dogs come in our yard last summer and get jumped on by our dogs and the hip gets broke again. We offered to pay the Vet and at the time they said no. Our biggest dog Alf and their Rot have been chasing each other back and forth over the property line for Six years playing. all the time. Usually not a problem. Than they put a house in for their son as far from their house and very close to ours as possible and cleared land and put a driveway in right along the shared property line. And now they have the little dogs. They are constantly in our yard trying to pick a fight with the big ones.
That is where the problem lies. The big dogs play rough and the little ones get hurt. We chase them out of our yard and try to keep them apart. You would think the neighbors would have a fence up by now if they were that worried. They have been saying for three years that they were going to put up a chain link fence as their young granddaughters live there. They bought several sections and left them in the yard to rust. They have the money. They buy stuff like the golf cart all the time. I don’t care how many toys they have.
Yesterday the neighbors decide to drive up and down the road in their new golf cart. They let the wiener dogs run behind it including the one with the bad hip. (Stupid Stupid) Our dogs run out to the road, I run out and call them back right away but their dog now has a broke hip again. It is prone to that, duh. So he shows up at our door to let me know how angry he is that we let our viscous dogs run loose and they are going to get shot. This guy means it, he has done this kind of thing before.
Every one has 4 or more dogs on this road and they all run loose. There are 15 to twenty big dogs within a mile either way. Not as bad as it sounds as it is in the country. They usually stay in their own yards and most of us bring them in at night. If he had gotten farther down the road his dog probably would have gotten hurt by one of them. They all run out to the road and sniff each other when one of us goes for a walk. But we are first in line so we get the blame for their stupidity.
Out here in this backwards run county you can shoot a dog anytime anywhere even in the owners yard and all you have to do is claim the dog was exhibiting viscous behavior. You can even shoot it to protect your dog. We called the Sheriff to confirm. I have no intention of shooting or doing anything else to their pets. It is not their fault that the owners are selfish and irresponsible. The good news is it now has my husband motivated to put up a good fence (yea!) around the yard. He is at Home Depot now pricing them out. I’ve wanted one for a long time but our priority has been keeping the horse fence up.
I just wish they’d use some sense with those dogs. I asked him about that last night but their attitude is that our dogs are the problem so they need to be shot. Period. And that includes in the road or the woods (ours) behind the house. He’s just waiting for the opportunity. Basically they want to have their cake and eat it too.Any way that is my very long rant about the dogs. I just needed to “talk” to another dog person who would understand.

Glad you’re finally getting a fence. Your dogs might sulk, but at least they’ll be safe.November 3, 2007 at 2:38 pm #633624Im sorry, too, but in the country or not, no dogs should be out running free. Glad you are getting a fence.
November 3, 2007 at 2:55 pm #633625You must be talking about my neighbor! I have one of those too. 👿
Before putting the fence up you might want to get informed about the rules of putting a fence up. I’m in Canada and our rules are if you put a fence right on the property line(Smack in the middle) the neighbor can take it down if he likes and there is noting you can do about it. Also you have the right to ask for half the cost to be paid be him (if he does not well thats another story). If we put the fence 6 inches inward of the property line then he can’t touch it. So make sure you nkow your legal rights before to protect yourself.
And good luck! 😉November 3, 2007 at 3:45 pm #633626Blackdesertwind wrote:You must be talking about my neighbor! I have one of those too. 👿

And good luck! 😉Just so you know, if the fence is there for more than 10 years, then the 6 inches will become part of your neighbour’s property, unless you have it clearly noted down on paper. So BDW’s advice is really sound; check the laws, otherwise you might end up with a nasty situation, especially with a neighbour like that.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmNovember 3, 2007 at 4:50 pm #633627I hate people so much sometimes, it just p****s me off when I hear stories of people being complete jack****s.
Great thoughts from Blackdesertwind and dragonmedley, always protect yourself from horrible people like that. (or try to, they sometimes even find ways around the law)
Sorry about you having horrible neighbors.
👿
November 3, 2007 at 5:29 pm #633628That really bites. I’m glad you’re putting up a fence, chainlink or wood?

Already done. We paid a surveyor over $2000.00 to get it certified and in records He also put pins in. So we are safe! And khat, you can verify that info with the city’s inspector. Don’t take just about every body’s word. You would be surprised at the info (bad info) we got from different people!

Glad you’re finally getting a fence. Your dogs might sulk, but at least they’ll be safe.Thanks. We have 100 foot runners for the dogs. We let them run lose when we are outside. I have no problem with having a fence. I’d love to have a dog proof fence. I just hated having him come over getting in my face and being so one sided.
We had our yard fenced between our property and theirs. Had it surveyed and all. We put posts up to mark the property line and had the actual fence a foot inside. We took care of the property too. When they put the second house and driveway in he asked us to take the fence down. He was going to put a chain link fence up on his side. He had also put a couple storage buildings facing his sons driveway. He wanted to end up with their driveway on the outside of the fence with room to turn into the buildings and not hit our fence. That is now what both families (theirs not us) use to drive down with their four wheelers, golf cart, tractor blah blah blah. They removed any “natural” barrier that was there for the last ten years, we removed our fence at their request and they never put a fence up. Now they want us to put a fence
back up since they consider our dogs to be the problem not ours. So now we will put our fence up and include the road frontage. It will be one to keep our dogs in. Our other neighbors have a fence up along the property line and have no problem with us connecting to it.November 3, 2007 at 6:00 pm #633631Blackdesertwind wrote:dragonmedley wrote:Blackdesertwind wrote:You must be talking about my neighbor! We previously had it surveyed and pins in (See previous post) Now it is just a matter of putting it back the way it was and including the front. After that if their dogs come in our yard we are not responsible. We won’t hurt them. I like dogs. I just can’t afford the type of fence needed to keep out the little dogs. 🙄 I can however keep mine in. 🙂

It’s a good thing that at least you have one neighbor that makes since and understands. Did you keep the old fence that you had taken down? You could maybe put that one back on. The fact that they asked you to take down your fence so that they could put theirs in place of yours, they should pay to get one put in not you.November 3, 2007 at 10:40 pm #633633Gah, I have a neighbor like that too, but he’s across the street from us. His Boxers escape his yard all the time and have attacked my dog when we were going for a walk. They have a bush fence and think that it will keep their dogs in the yard, never mind that even before the leaves fell, I could see several hole in it. They really should have a Chain link inside the bushes.
It’s good that you’re putting the fence up again.

I have to agree fully with this, in some places if your dog injures or kills another dog on your property you are 100% at fault for not preventing it from happening. I keep my dogs contained unless we are at the dog park because I dont want something like that happening.
November 5, 2007 at 8:21 pm #633635Good gad. What a bloody idiot. I love how his bad choices are suddenly your problem. He chose to not have his dog’s fracture fixed; now when his dog gets out and does something silly that reinjures it, it’s your fault. (Since he ran over it in the first place, it’s even stupider.) He wanted the fence down, and now he comes over and figuratively pisses on your doorpost and grunts and scratches about how big and mean he is and he’s gonna git yur dawwwwgs. He isn’t even intelligent enough to keep his dogs in their yard where they’d be safe. I sure wish stupidity was toxic to the host.
Start documenting these little incursions of his, the fence thing, the original injury to the dachshund, and all that. It’s good that you’ve already talked to the sheriff; document that conversation too. Find out what all of the applicable laws are, regarding dogs and property fencing and all the rest. This SOB neighbor thinks he’s pretty hot stuff. He is going to keep on pushing into your face and at some point you may need to have some backup. Documenting the events and his threats will help a lot. He may be a worthless waste of protein, but he can still do a lot of harm. Protect yourself.
I’m really sorry to hear about your grandmother being ill. 🙁 And also sorry about the miserable allergies. Hang in there.
