So, I mentioned on Draco’s Stress thread that I’m in intense pain this morning — woke up with it after doing nothing unordinary yesterday. I also have a small rash on my back near the place where it hurts. I went to my chiropractor, and he sent me to a medical doctor. It turns out I have shingles. Yay! 😕
Shingles is a virus that happens when a child has chicken pox. It becomes dormant and lives in the nerves and may appear or never appear later in life. Untreated, it may cause all sorts of neurological problems. Treated, it’s just a very itchy, blistery rash and intensely horrible back pain for 3-4 WEEKS! Are they KIDDING ME?! I have to teach with this pain? I have to do conventions with this pain? *sigh*
Sorry about the rant/vent. I guess it would be my turn sooner or later. I’ve been crying on and off all day from the pain. I cried when my chiropractor adjusted me; it hurt so bad. He’s never seen me cry in all the time I’ve known him and all the pain I’ve had in the past. I have some ibuprofen in me now, so hopefully it won’t be so bad.
But now I have to leave for the last weekend of Ren Fest (and sleep in a tent for the weekend). I’m not looking forward to that. Sorry. I’m going to go cry again. See you all Monday.

I never had chicken pox. O.o;
September 28, 2007 at 11:48 pm #621723Ouch! Sorry to hear you’ve come down with a case of Shingles. At least you’ve caught it and can hopefully have it treated. I never had chicken pox either, PaperCut.
September 29, 2007 at 12:03 am #621724I am sorry emerald! The only advice I can give is to stay cool. Heat makes the itching worse. I hope it is a mild case and goes away quickly.
September 29, 2007 at 12:08 am #621725Sorry to hear that, emerald! Hope you feel better & it goes away soon!
September 29, 2007 at 1:02 am #621726Isn’t shingles contagious, too? Get some rest… well, as much as possible, anyway. 😕
Sending careful get well hugs!

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmSeptember 29, 2007 at 1:12 am #621727awwwww poor you! the bad luck has really been going around to everybody lately! i can’t think of too many people, if any, that have been missed by the bad luck cloud. well, a girl i went to school with in college got shingles and she was a wreck from it. she was out of school for almost a month and just stayed in her apartment feeling itchy, crusty n gross. i guess it really does take a bit of time to clear up, and more than anything she simply didn’t want to go out because she itchy n miserable and wanted to keep tender areas protected. i think she had it all up her back onto her neck, so i think she had a pretty bad case. she was also somewhat frail and less than perfectly healthy condition, so i wish you better luck than she had emerald! you certainly will have a whole pep squad of people here rooting you on to feel better quickly and sending happy healing mental waves!! take care of ourself and good luck feeling better!
September 29, 2007 at 2:08 am #621728Oh gosh, emerald… I’m so sorry 🙁 That sounds horrible. I hope you feel better soon! Maybe you can just take it easy with whatever you do for a while…
September 29, 2007 at 2:17 am #621729I can sympathize with the back pain. Hope the ibuprophin helps.
September 29, 2007 at 2:33 am #621730well, even though shingles certainly doesn’t sound fun and rather long winded in the healing process, at least it isn’t doesn’t sound like something horribly expensive in order to recover (me foolishly assuming). i mean, god forbid you broke your nose or a limb or needed some other type of surgery, needing to spend thousands of dollars to get fixed up. that makes being unwell that much worse- when you need to spend so much to make yourself right again. money seems to be so tight for so many people lately, so maybe that is a silver lining… if some sort of health ailment HAD to happen to you now, at least it wasn’t a bank breaker. 😕 ( so long as you still feel well enough to make your fair dates, etc. to bring in some dough) hang in there woman!! 🙂
September 29, 2007 at 2:41 am #621731Oh hon I am so sorry 🙁 I really hope you get better soon and the pain gets better. I am sending you healing thoughts!
September 29, 2007 at 2:55 am #621732I wish you the best of luck for a speedy recovery. I have had chicken pocks when I was 7 and I was such a sharing brother that I gave it to my sister so we both got over it at an early age. I got to stay home from school in the 2nd grade for an entire month and my sister was in 4th grade. I hope I do not encounter Shigles myself
September 29, 2007 at 6:55 am #621733Im so sorry to hear! I really hope you feel better soon sweetie! *sends mental chocolate and mental Calamine (sp?)*
Take it as easy as possible; I know- easier said than done. Hope it all goes away soon.
HUGS!
September 29, 2007 at 8:23 am #621734I sure hope it doesn’t last 3-4 weeks, emerald. All the best.
