More good news – Again this morning I went to the hospital to see Tristen – He is much more alert today than he was yesterday and is now out of the critical 48 hour after surgery period. They fed him solid food last night for the first time and said he ate like a pig. I was a little worried about that as I cook hamburger and rice and mix it in with his dog food and he doesn’t like plain dog food. They feel he is out of danger and no longer in the critical care unit but will have to spend a few more days in the hospital. I am sure all your prayers and good wishes helped a great deal. Thanks.

The news is good – I just came from the hospital to check on Tristen – the vet thinks he will be OK and able to come home in about 3 days. He is still on the IV but they plan to give him some food this evening. I didn’t stay to long because he is still kind of out of it. The pneumonia was probably caused by the vomiting causing a backup into the lungs but he is responding to the drugs

Thanks for all your prayers. The vet just called and Tristen is out of surgery and is awake and alert but he is battling pneumonia and they removed a node from his liver for a biopsy. He will be in the hospital for 3 to 5 days and has a long battle ahead of him. I was surprised they operated him on Sunday afternoon but I guess I was better off not knowing till it was over. He is not out of the woods yet but this was encouraging news to me.

Some of you may think I am crazy but would you please pray for my dog Tristen (that’s him in the middle of my siggie). I had to rush him to the emergency hospital late last night. He threw up what looked like a large glob of marshmallow fluff. I called the emergency vet just as he was doing it again. I rushed him up there and they had to keep him to figure out what was wrong. He also vomited again in the car on the way and four times while waiting for the vet to look at him. He will be 12 years old Sept 21st so he is no spring chicken but he is my baby and I love him dearly. The vet called me this morning and asked if I was coming up to see him today. I said I would be there a little later. When I got there the vet told me he had an inverted stomach probably caused by the heavy vomiting and surgery was the only thing that would save him but it was very expensive. I told him to do it. He said he would have to called in a specialty surgeon that had done a number of these. He also said Tristen’s didn’t look as bad as a lot of them he had seen on x-rays. I am now waiting for the emergency clinic to call me as to when it will be done. Meanwhile he is in the critical care unit which is probably the best place for him at the moment. The vet thinks he has a very good chance but I am scared to death. Thanks for listening to me ramble I guess I just needed to talk about it.

Your poor baby! I sincerely hope Tristen comes out alright and you can bet I’ll pray for him.

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope Tristan’s surgery goes smoothly and that he’s completely recovered soon.

I hope Tristan’s surgery goes well. It was a good thing you got him right to the vet. And it’s not odd at all to pray for a dog – he’s a member of the family, too! I’ll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

Best of wishes…and there isn’t anything silly about thinking of your dog as a family member and just as valuable as a person. My pets are my family!!!!!

Poor old Tristen! 🙁 I’m glad that he’s in recovery now. It’s good that they took him straight to surgery: when the stomach flips like that it’s very bad, and fixing it quickly is essential. You did the right thing, taking him over straightaway. Hang in there!

Not sure how I missed this thread. But I hope he continues to improve, he should, dogs have amazing recrup powers. Hope he is home soon now that he is on the mend.

So was he bloated, is that what the vet meant by inverted stomach? That usually happens most often in large dogs like great danes, but it happens in smaller dogs too, just less often. If you get to the vet in time, prognosis is usually very good, and it sounds like you did just fine.

It shouldn’t happen again, when this happens they usually secure the stomach to the abdomen wall so it can’t flip over again. So at least you needn’t worry about a repeat. Hope the liver biopsy is nothing major.

Anyway, hang in there, your doggie will be home soon.

Yes, if it was an inverted stomach… then it is critical to get him to an animal hospital quickly like you did. Otherwise, it can prove fatal to a dog. This condition happens to Bassetts too.

I think of all my pets as family members as well. We’re not the only ones as you can tell! I will keep Tristen in my prayers for a speedy recovery. 🙂

I’m glad he made it through the surgery! I hope the node on his liver isn’t anything serious and he makes a quick and as painless as possible recovery.
