I think this will be the last unicorn I do, unless someone begs me. I can’t seem to get them to come out the way I want. No matter how careful I am, I always have stray marks from darker pastel, atleast one finger print and ‘ring around the horn’. *takes breath*
Ok, she is done all in pastels. I startd with a creamy color and built from there, mixing my pastels as I went. I did a layer of pearl ex gold all over her too, helps her depth I think tho she doesn’t look shiny at all. I kept going darker and darker careful not to go too orange or pink. When I liked her base color, I started to add the darker brown shading. Her dark parts probably have about 10-15 layers. Then, after I was almost done today, I thought she was dry and picked her up, Voila! Finger prints 🙄 I was able to cover some up by just adding a coat of gloss and then a coat of matte, but some are still visable. Added her copper ‘beads’ and set her infront of the AC. I was super careful with the masking, but still ended up with a little sliver of white at the base of the horn darnit!
So, anyway, I think I’m gonna keep her, unless ofcourse someone makes me an offer. For now tho, she will go join the carnivors on the shelf…

September 8, 2007 at 11:35 pm #614845Thanks! I love her too, I shouldn’t sound so negative. It’s just frustrating sometimes when I mess up and don’t have the experience to fix it. I get worried about ruining stuff 😆 …

Me too.
And I’m squiting reeeal hard, but have yet to see the professed fingerprints. Hey, at least we’re sure YOU painted her 😀

September 9, 2007 at 12:43 am #614848She looks fantastic! Very nice shading on her too.
Maybe get a little fine tipped brush to poke around the horn to touch up the little white sliver?
September 9, 2007 at 12:50 am #614849Wow…shes gorgeaous, I really like the way she turned out. 😆 I love the colors.

September 9, 2007 at 1:01 am #614850Very nice colors! The shading is so well done!
Great job. 🙂September 9, 2007 at 1:15 am #614851wow i think your way to hard on yourself, shes totally lovely 😯 just use one of the tiny blotter paint brushes to go around the horn, ive had that occur a few times to,unless the finger prints really deep the clear coat should cover it over,as for the chalk powder, what i do is keep a paint brush on the side,so that when im done and i notice any stray marks from the pastels,i dampen the other brush and just wipe the strays away, besides some little strays gives them more character 😉

The problem with that is that she isn’t done in paints. I’m not sure I could add color there without messing up the face…And if I try to match some paint in there I don’t think it would blend…Anyone pastelers have any thoughts?

Oh, I gotch ya! Sorry, I must have missed that she was done with pastels.
I’ve worked with pastels before, but never on a scultpure. You could still probably use a little brush though to apply the pastel like fauxbird said.
September 9, 2007 at 2:32 am #614854She’s beautiful, I think you are too hard on yourself.
I like her a lot!

September 9, 2007 at 3:46 pm #614855I agree she is pretty. Have you tried not going quite so far down with the masking? Maybe that would help with the “ring around the horn”. That or maybe use masking tape instead so you are able to control where it goes a little better? I used masking tape on my uni and kirin’s horns when I was sealing them and they came out clean.
September 9, 2007 at 4:24 pm #614856IF I do another unicorn, I may try masking tape. I don’t have trouble with the kirins, just these darn unicorns….
