I have a beagle/heeler/terrier mix dog named Karly. Normally, Karly looks like this:
But this morning when I woke up, she had a swollen mouth and Jaw! This is what she looks like now, but this morning it was 5x worse. Her eyes were squinting because it was so swollen.
The most swollen part is her back jaw. You can really see it when she yawns because her inner cheeks shouldn’t be in her mouth that far.
I got scared when I saw that. I asked KC if he could take her to the vet because I had to get ready for work. After he left, I remembered that he had a job interview at 10:00, so I took a shower, called him, and switched places with him at the vet after calling in late to work.
The vet says it looks like an allergic reaction to something-probably a bug bite. I’m sure that’s what it was because we haven’t changed anything in her diet, and she hasn’t gotten into anything.
Notice the hankerchief? The vet’s put that on her. It’s so cute! She also got some medicine, and she has been sleeping a lot. My poor baby! She is my baby, and she is the first dog that I adopted as being “my” dog.
Do you guys have dogs?
What kind of trouble have they gotten into?August 4, 2007 at 3:59 am #492184August 4, 2007 at 4:35 am #605823Poor baby! *sends hugs* Hopefully she gets better soon!
My dog, Sam, likes try and eat wasps and bees. He’s a bit of a menace to the flower beds. As far as we know he hasn’t caught one yet, cause he still chases them 🙄
August 4, 2007 at 5:46 am #605824I had a dog that I could not break of eating yellow jackets! A really stupid dog.
Perhaps that is what happened to yours! A sting in the mouth.August 4, 2007 at 5:59 am #605825Awe, poor poochie! I hope she gets better soon. Glad you got her to the vet when you did. Hopefully the vet did a very thorough body check to be sure no bugs were burrowed into her skin anywhere on her body causing a reaction.
No doubt the meds will make her tired but rest is a great healer in and of itself so it’s good she is resting. Please keep us posted.
I’ll do my own form of wishes and prayers for you; it’s my spiritualism practices. I’ll light a brown candle (brown stands for animals) and carve her name in it, put healing stones and such around it and dowse it with healing oil and direct healing and positive energy towards it. When I do my meditation, I’ll include directing energy towards your sweetie pie. Having a pic (I nicked it from the listing above for my meditation) to focus on really helps direct energy to that exact animal; or so has been my experience.
Call me nuts for my practices and beliefs but when all is said and done, what I do is done out of love, compassion and caring.. It’s all positive and never have I done anything negative (even when I havent liked someone; Im just not a negative energy sender type; or a grudge holder, etc).
Good luck and give the cutie a kiss for me! Hugs to you too as Im know youre sweating it out. We’re here for you!
HUGS XXX
PTAugust 4, 2007 at 10:15 am #605826If your vet released her that fast it was probably just an insect sting. My uncles dog develouped a way of eating bees and other insects with stingers, he would crush them with his chest or side of body and then lick them off the pavement. Effective but gross.
I would help but I am just to tired to get out of bed today~
Engaged to a WeaselAugust 4, 2007 at 1:36 pm #605827If the swelling goes away quickly on the treatment, then odds are that it’s a bug bite. I would only worry if it came back shortly after she finished her meds. But she looks young, so that would be unlikely.
Poor thing! Bugs sure can be nasty. I knew a hulking redbone hound who came up fiercely lame on a hind foot for three days. The lymph node behind his knee swelled up as big as a grape. And the source of the problem? One nasty big red ant that had locked its jaws and stinger into the skin between his toes, on the underside of his foot. It was dead, but still causing him grief; he must have been pretty sensitive to the venom. Once it was removed (which was easy for fingernails but impossible for the dog working with his tongue) his leg went back to normal within about 36 hours.
August 4, 2007 at 2:52 pm #605828Aw, poor puppy. I hope she gets better soon.
My puppy, Beretta, has had various accidents, like a un-in with the pony that left her with a broken toe, or getting hit by a car. Thankfully, she recovered well and quickly and is, as far as I know, still a strapping healthy little dog.August 4, 2007 at 4:22 pm #605829Aww your poor pibble puppy, I have 2 shibas they are too old to do much of anything, LoLz. Did the vet give you benedryl?
August 4, 2007 at 4:53 pm #605830Aaawww poor baby.. I hope she feels better soon…
I used to live on a ranch so we would have a lot of dogs at one time… once we had 3 dogs all the same age (same litter) and my dad had friends over… 2 of the dogs had run off playing in the forest and the other was staying around the house… Then suddenly she wouldn’t let us out of the house, she stood at the and barked at us and wouldn’t let us leave… it was weird but then 10-15 minutes later the other 2 dogs came back with a face full of quills… That was fun… and a great bill sinse it was on a Sat and vets only have emergancy calls on Sat..
August 4, 2007 at 4:55 pm #605831Poor babes! (you & the dog) My dog swelled up like that once (in the face) and we raced to the vet, who gave her benedryl and told me that if I had called he would’ve just had me buy some benedryl & give it to her. I told him that I was far to panicked at that point and would’ve wanted to bring her in anyway 🙂 . Next time I’ll just give her benedryl… Thankfully, she’s not done that to me again.
August 4, 2007 at 8:45 pm #605832I had a lab/rott mix for 14 years and I never had any problems with her getting into trouble that cost extra towards vet bills. Now I have 2 min daschunds 2 and 3 years old. So far 1 cost 800.00 from getting into some kind of poison or something, still unknown. The other got hit by a car and dislocated her hip and that cost 450.00. Alot of money but well worth it, just like my dragons.
August 4, 2007 at 8:58 pm #605833I live in FL and have an almost 12 year old chow chow that unfortunately likes to grab the poison frogs that live here. I have had to wipe his mouth out then rush him to the vet 4 times. If you don’t get the dog to a vet quickly the poison will kill them. Apparently he is not to smart when it comes to leaving them alone and can find one no matter how well it hides. I hope your puppy is doing better and that the vet is right and itis an allergic bite.
August 5, 2007 at 4:27 am #605834Awww…Thanks everybody!
PT-I did find a dead black bug on her thigh which seemed to be the cause of it since it was latched on to her pretty well. I pulled it off which hurt her, but she seemed grateful. Thanks for the prayers! It’s quite intriguing how you prayed for her! It must have worked because her swelling is down. It’s almost back to normal!
I will keep the baby benadryl in mind for if this happens again!
Karly says thanks for the support and advice! 😉
Ok, well I say thank you! Karly is just sleeping. zzzz….August 5, 2007 at 4:06 pm #605835I’m so glad she’s feeling better! Yay! Karly! Oh, sorry. She’s sleeping. Yay! Karly!
