O.K., here is what I have going on. I purchased 3 PYO’s (dragon, griffin and unicorn) and I am going to try it for the first time. Firstly let me state that I wish very much to abide by copywrite rules so I figure as I paint I will submit my pieces to make sure I am not infringing on anything. That said, these lines are extensive and I do not know them all. So I am a little worried that I might accidentally make a mistake there. Hopefully there will be a little understanding if I accidentally do something naughty and I have no problem fixing it if I do. I love to paint and I have done fossil molds, castings, and the subsequent paint jobs. (Long story on that.) I think I would be really good at this and I have some ideas. The dragon is going to be my first piece so I got the following supplies and I wanted some more experienced painters to comment on the supplies that I am getting. I have some standard acrylics here but I really wanted a chance to try some interference and metallic paints too. With fossils everything is muted and earth tones. I wanted to break out into color. So I picked up:

    This airbrush kit:

And I got this kit of paints:

I am going to get the masking fluid on my next paycheck and I already have the brushes in the tutorial.

I was looking at these flakes and I was wondering if anybody has used them:

Any input offered would be very welcome at this point so thank you all in advance for your patience with a newbie and for your time.

As far as copyright goes, the thing to avoid is anything that Windstone has already done. So no painting your pieces in a color that looks exactly like a Windstone production color, or uses the same color scheme in the same spots.

As far as painting goes, I don’t airbrush, so I can’t help you there, but really the best way to learn is to just dive in. You can always paint over your mistakes and try again!

Good advice that. I think I would be O.K. there but I am a little out of touch with what was produced from 1996-2000. At any rate I am so darned excited to try these I am making my husband nuts. He really wants me to practice on some disposable pots. I find that I am really more of a Geronimo person. I love to just jump right in. I think that makes him really nervous! 😈 We are really well balanced in that way. 😀 I had this idea for the dragon so tell me if anyone has seen this on a piece. I was thinking about how many animals have different colors when viewed from above and below. If you have a dragon that is out hunting, they would not want to be seen by their prey. I want to spray the first coat as a white from the bottom up and black from the top down. That would be the base coat. The second coat would be from the bottom up colors in the sky and from the top down some detail in browns and some hints of other colors that remind me of New Mexico, those lavenders, pinks, golds etc. At which point I am thinking some multi tonal metallics or interference paints to top it off. Then I would do the detail work. I want to try to keep to nature even though this is a mythological creature. I can see the dragon so clearly in my head. I wanted to try some rainbow scales as well. O.K., now I am just running on. 😳 Anyway, that is what I have been thinking. Anything out there like that?

Doesn’t really sound like any prodiction Windstone coloration to me. A great place to see all the regular prodiction windstones is the WE Encyclopedia at Astral Castle. For the limited ones check out the Ebay Sales Gallery.

Thats one hardcore, prehistoric, mythic (tho I believe dragons existed as a form of dinosaur) better than cool Jurassic cameleon on a grand killer size scale! Awesome idea and if/when you get it finished, Im already chomping at the bit to see how it comes out. And if you sell it, to see how much it fetches. Good luck in all aspects but most of all, have fun! Great imagination! Geronimoooooooooo!!!!!

All I could think of when you mentioned a request for input, was ,”Input, more input!” from Johnny5 on Short Circuit. 😆 😆

Awe, I am so glad somebody else remembers that movie. I fell in love with number 5! I am one step closer to my plan mwahahaha! 😈 My airbrush set arrived today. Now I just need the dragon and my new set of paints. I can not wait to see this dragon. I hope it comes out as well as I see it in my head. I can see it so clearly! 🙂
