April 8, 2007 at 6:07 am #490434April 8, 2007 at 6:17 am #560018Use veeerrrrry little at a time, like a pinpoint for small details! If you are spreading it over a large area, use a little at a time and spread it out in a thin layer.
I’d say you can practice on the bottom of your sculpture ( at least, that’s what I did… ) if you don’t want to practice on paper.
April 8, 2007 at 7:12 am #560019I dilute the Golden Brand fluid interference paint (haven’t tried any other brands) with liquid polymer emulsion before I apply it. I make a very thin consistency. After I started this practice, I never got cloudiness or whiteness again, even if I applied multiple coats.
And some people use water instead of liquid polymer emulsion.
April 8, 2007 at 4:50 pm #560020has any one made a tutorial for using these paints? taken photos in progress while painting?
April 8, 2007 at 6:02 pm #560021Nam posted a video in this thread which shows her painting the sun griffin. Its not specifically on interference paints, but its really neat to watch!
Here’s Nam’s post form that thread:

I get really nervous when ‘public’ speaking so forgive how dumb I sound. So, it’s basically that, on each feather, maybe… 10 times? Takes forever. There are about 8-12 thin thin layers of paint on each feather, and the wing feathers took longer because of the banding.
I have him on a lazy susan, that’s how I can spin him. I put some mat board behind him to block out the glare from my windows.

I use the polymer/acrylic medium in exactly this way. It’s the only way I can avoid the milkyness of the interference paints. It takes about 3-5 layers depending on the intensity desired. When painting little bits on each feather this process alone usually takes an entire day. 😉

Thanks so much Algy, Lokie and Nam….I use the golden brand and have tried another brand too, and dilute it with water, and like you said VERY small amounts at a time and several coats, and still sometimes get the milky coloring to it…..I think I will try the polymer/acrylic medium now….can you buy it a Michaels, or do you have to go to an art store/supplier to get it??
April 8, 2007 at 6:53 pm #560024Not sure if they sell it at Michael’s- never tried there! I got mine from a Dick Blick Store. I use the Golden Brand GAC 100, specifically. Use whatever works for you! 🙂

Thanks Nam! Yea, I just invested like 40 bucks on the 1 OUNCE Golden Brand Bottle Paints (and got like 3 different colors , they are NOT cheap are they?? LOL ) to see if they were better than the LiquidTex (sp) that I had, but they BOTH still were having the milkyness to them. I am going to try what you and Lokie said. Thanks again! 😉 😀
April 8, 2007 at 7:07 pm #560026I use Liquitex Heavy Body for my stuff. I just dilute with water… I’ve never had any sort of problem with the interference’s milky-ness.
April 8, 2007 at 7:12 pm #560027Hmmmm, I have the Luquitex too, thats what I started out with….then I wonder what I am doing wrong with the water then?? 😯 😕

is your water unually hard? ie too many minerals? would bottled water work better?

I have a full-home water softner & filter, think that would make a difference? I never thought about that.
April 8, 2007 at 9:17 pm #560030i dont know if the hardness of the water would make a difference. does the softener leave in a bunch of other minerals?
i do know that henna (stuff you put on your hands and hair) usually says not to use tap water or metal bowls.
