Some of you already noticed the pictures I uploaded to my gallery space with pics of the now-finished Starling Gryphon (thank you so much for the kind comments, btw! :D) and I wanted to show it off a little more to those who might not check the Gallery section as obsessively as I sometimes do heh heh
Here’s all five pics, with an extra pic to showcase how different the gryphon can look in different light ^_^

As I noted in my gallery picture comments, I tried to incorporate the suggestions people made regarding making the eyes stand out, darkening the red in the foreclaws and adding interference to the wings as well as the body ^_^ (I wish the way they glow was a little more visible to the camera, but they definitely shift according to the light!) and the “stars” are actual parts of the feathers rather than just painted overtop. I swear, painting and then repainting all those little V’s for those “stars” made me go literally cross-eyed on more than one occasion! I even added a layer of pearly, sparkly white overtop so they aren’t so matte but actually sparkle as much as the rest of the plummage ^_^
I’m going to make a post in the Flea Market section after I finish this post because this little beauty is going to be for sale! I know a few people expressed an interest in this little fellow, I hope we can work things out! And I can always paint another one! LOL
March 15, 2007 at 4:17 am #490120March 15, 2007 at 4:55 am #551792That is amazing! I can easily believe you went cross-eyed. The detailing on the feathers boggles the mind (and eyes).

Thank you! ^_^ LOL Yes my brother came in the room at one point and watched me actually cross my eyes and then he ordered me to stop for the day. I suppose he was right, I had been pushing hour five at that point heh heh.
March 15, 2007 at 5:22 am #551794That’s really neat paint scheme. I still like it. Any idea how much time you put into it in all?

LOL I’m glad you *still* like it, that’s a good sign! Um, my guess is somewhere between 30-40 hours (I usually broke it up into 4-5 hour sessions to try to save my eyes LOL)
March 15, 2007 at 5:39 am #551796I can see why. 😀
March 15, 2007 at 5:41 am #551797I enjoyed it though, brought me back to my art school days of working in my wee studio for eight hours straight until I almost fell over! LOL Labour of love ^_^
March 15, 2007 at 10:15 am #551798I like the whole griff, but just LQQK at those long feathers. So soft looking. How did you achieve that? Lots of blending, I guess. *sigh* I’m with you on the 3rd grade paint jobs, DM. Poor us! hehe
How do you wash/scrape the paint off? My poor griff needs an overhaul:-/

If you try to wash/scrape paint off be careful that you don’t scrub some of the detailing off. I washed my wolf twice with warm water, soap and a soft toothbrush and it seems like I scrubbed some of the detailing off trying to remove the paint. It works best if the paint is fairly fresh.

On the wing feathers? LOTS of blending and repainting and adding medium-diluted washes and then the interference overtop really helped! LOL
I’ve never tried to get paint off a PYO, if it’s acrylic I’m not sure you can! @_@ I just paint over! LOL
March 15, 2007 at 4:13 pm #551801He looks really great! Turned out beautifully!
March 15, 2007 at 6:11 pm #551802Thanks for he advice pegasi. I wondered about ruining the sculpt (more than it’s ruined now! lol) I guess I will just walk away from it for a while and paint over it as sunhawk suggested.
March 15, 2007 at 6:39 pm #551803Another option someone mentioned was to use finger nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to help get the paint off. I used some nail polish remover without acetone (I already had it) and it helped in some of the more stubborn areas along with soap, water and gentle scrubbing.
The wolf isn’t “ruined” so to speak but the feathers on one side look more like what I imagine the soft-feathered griffins do (never seen one in person). I’d have to get another wolf to paint and compare to know for sure, and I plan on it at a time when I have a little more money to spend. I want to give the blue jay wolf another go since I think I figured out what I did wrong.
March 15, 2007 at 6:48 pm #551804I didn’t mean to imply yours was ruined. I know mine would be though. lol There are already several layers of paint on it from me tweaking it and I doubt I could ever get all of them off. I’ll just have to keep at it. I’ve learned alot just from messing around with him, so that’s something: -)
