Have any of you ever bought something from The Alcove?
I’m thinking of ordering from them but I’d like to know if they’re reliable first.
February 23, 2007 at 4:55 am #542759they are about 3 miles from where I live. They are very nice people and I have bought from them in the past. I would recommend them.
February 23, 2007 at 6:33 am #542760They are also about 3 miles from me and it is a nice store.
February 23, 2007 at 7:17 am #542761I’ve ordered from them over the phone – they’re wonderful! I got my ruby emperor and ruby rising spectral from them. Everything came boxed very well and all in one piece. And the prices on those two pieces were CHEAP!! I love them.

If I may ask once more… Anyone ever bought something from the Dragon’s Lair: http://www.shopnh.com/dragons/contactus.asp
Their Spectral is more expensive but shipping is free, so I would end up saving money.
February 23, 2007 at 1:26 pm #542763Do you have a place to ship them to in the US? It doesn’t sound like the free shipping applies to anywhere outside of the US.

You should email them first to see if they have it in. I’ve found out the hard way that they list things they don’t have, like the Young Oriental, and then tell you it’s on backorder from the factory, so it may be a while before they ship. Well, the Young Oriental is one of those that the factory is not certain they will make any more of. So why should he hang onto my money instead of me? He will give a refund though. Although this last time I got a snotty reply too, and probably won’t buy from him again. I got my Coiled Peacock Dragon from him and it came well-packaged. So there’s ups and downs…I just thought I’d let you know about both.
February 23, 2007 at 3:26 pm #542765The Alcove: I bought something from them and had it shipped to someone else as a gift. They called me to confirm and make sure I wasn’t just using someone else’s credit card (which is great to make sure no one gets ripped off!). Not only that but when I told them I was sending it to a different address as a gift, they included a very nice birthday card to the person “from” me! I didn’t even ask them to, I was very impressed.
I met the people from The Dragon’s Lair in person last year at Dragon*Con. They were nice folks and they had a huge selection of Windstones on display, and many retired ones. They seemed real up to date on Windstone stuff (when my husband asked me about the Secret Keeper, the store owner heard and told us that it wasn’t released for retail yet). I don’t know about mail ordering though.

I bought a set of clawfoot pillar candlelamps and a mushroom ring candlelamp from them last year. Both had excellent packaging (double boxed) and were shipped promptly. The clawfoot pillar candlelamps were in mint condition, but the mushroom ring candlelamp had a small area where the paint was flaking off. They probably didn’t notice it because it wasn’t in a very noticeable location (it was right next to the bottom of the candle holder, and the flaking paint was probably was really hard to see until that area got agitated during the shipping process). Anyway, I requested to return it since I only collect mint condition pieces. Since that was a retired item and he didn’t have another, he gave me a full refund and reimbursed me for both original and return shipping. So I give them full marks for good customer service.
One thing that I want to highlight is that items in their “Retired” section may not be in new condition, and they don’t mention that on the website. For example, the mushroom ring candlelamp had been used (the candle in the candle holder was mostly used up). So if having a “new condition” item is a concern, you should confirm that with them before buying things in the “Retired” section.

I know, I was just too lazy to explain in detail π
What they will do is give me a rebate of the amount the shipping would have been in the US, so if shipping to the US would have been $12.00 and shipping to my place turns out to cost $20.00, I will only have to pay $8.00 for shipping.
Thanks for the look out though! π

They think they have it in stock but will email me on Monday with a definitive answer.

Wow, that’s really nice of them.February 23, 2007 at 11:50 pm #542770π Well, as it turns out the Dragon’s Lair didn’t have the Spectral, they sold it at a convention.
π But that’s okay, I ordered it from The Alcove, with shipping it was only $12.00 more than the other one. That’s really not bad at all. Plus I got him at regular retail price $130.00.
February 23, 2007 at 11:52 pm #542771Sounds like you got a good deal π
