Hey guys! I’m starting to go blind from painting this lovely fellow so I thought I’d get some feedback on him before I go any further heh heh
Here’s some shots in indirect sunlight rather than direct:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/sunhawk/windstonestarcheck4.jpgAnd here’s what he looked like before I gave him his stars, in his “summer plumage”
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/sunhawk/windstonestarless2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/sunhawk/windstonestarless1.jpgThose photos also give you a better idea of what his colouration is like under the stars, though the black underneath shows when not reflecting a light source ^_^
If you don’t know what a starling looks like, here’s one of the reference images I used: http://www.naturephotography.org.ua/photo/starling.jpg
Now I’m tentatively happy with the way his stars are going but I wanted to get your opinions on how they look and whether I should try to blend them a little into the darker parts of the plumage because right now I have them pretty stark. I had a fun time trying to follow the actual feather veins to try to make the stars appear part of the feathers and not just tacked on LOL Starlings have these odd pointy feathers which I think are really cute! I think the red/brown of the foreclaws turned out really good too, that was fun to mix up ^_^
Thanks for looking! I’m hoping to sell this pretty boy on Ebay when I’m done 😀 My first ebay auction w00t!
February 13, 2007 at 1:16 am #489669February 13, 2007 at 1:19 am #538814I like the stars. I would add some shimmer iridence to the large wing feathers though. And I am sorry…but I hate the red legs! I know starlings have redish legs..but they are not quite that bright. I would tone them down to bring it togeather more. Otherwise I like!!!
February 13, 2007 at 1:19 am #538815wow- that looks cool! i can’t wait to see it finished!
February 13, 2007 at 1:21 am #538816I love the stars. I am not so sure about the red claws/talons (maybe orange would look better or something to tie in the wings). I would also put some interferance paint on the wings.
February 13, 2007 at 1:25 am #538817Thanks guys! I was debating whether to add any interference to the wing feathers ^_^ And I can see what you mean about the foreclaws, I just love a deep ruddy red like that! LOL But the PYO isn’t for me so I’m amendable to making it less bright 😉
February 13, 2007 at 3:54 am #538818Woah! I thought the white was photoshopped in there at first! That’s INSANE! Wicked good job!!! I kinda like the red legs, though I think they look more like dragons arms then griffin arms. I’d maybe tone them down a tad, but it’s not necessary, it’s still beautiful!

You know what? You’re right! LOL They do look a bit Photoshopped in, just because they are matte and the rest is so shiny! LOL Thanks! I tell you, I could only paint those little buggers in 5 hour stretches, after that my eyes started to wiggle in place! LOL
February 13, 2007 at 5:58 am #538820Very nice, sunhawk! Toning down the red legs is a good idea. Unfortunately the brown eyes get lost in his head. I know starlings have brown eyes, but for art’s sake, it would probably help to add to points of bright color on the corners of his eyes so they show up.
February 13, 2007 at 4:42 pm #538821Aw you mean you’re making him for someone else? Man I was so hoping you were gonna post this to ebay so I could snag it! Bummer. It looks killer awesome and the uncolor of shimmery feathers is so very starling. I think it’s totally perfect.

Thanks for the imput! ^_^

Oh sorry, I didn’t mean that he’s already taken! LOL He’s definitely up for grabs once I finish him! I’ll be sure to make a post about it when i do! ^_^
I’m glad you like him! 😀 He could be yours soon! ^___^
February 13, 2007 at 5:31 pm #538825Well may the best bidder win then. I almost snagged Arlla’s jay wolf…but I’ll try harder this time to be there at auction close for your starling. It’ll be a perfect gift for someone I know because he owns a pet starling he rescued as a chick. The starling is not a paint job I’d ever see myself doing so I’m glad somebody did it so I can get that one instead! hahaha! You did it so well too! And your blending on the wing feathers look smooth like Dragonfeathers’. You keep getting better.

Oh that’s so cute, is the starling a good pet? *giggle* They are not terribly clever birds but it would be really funny to think of having one sit on your shoulder or something XD
Yeah my decision to do starling was based on a self-challenge of “Hmmmm what is the most difficult plumage job I can think of?” LOL Plus anything iridescent always makes me happy XD It was only later that I realized that it was going to be even harder than I thought due to the dissimiliar feather types of starling and PYO gryphon! XD
Oh thank you! I worked really hard at getting the wing feathers looking good, had to reblend about 5 times LOL Black is so unforgiving of mistakes after all! Heh heh
I hope you can win the auction for your friend ^_^
