It has come to my attention that the Ortho Evra birth control patch has become a new popular form of birth control in South America and is now in their drugstores and being prescribed! I STRONGLY urge everyone not to ever take this drug and to make sure no women you know take it. This is a life-threatening drug! I cannot express enough how deadly this is…it has killed women, left some paralysed as a result of strokes, and has caused many many health problems as a result by nearly killing other victims, myself included.
PLEASE be sure nobody you know is using Ortho Evra anywhere, and do your research! This is a drug that is a silent killer still being prescribed and now is spreading to other countries regardless of the class action suit filed against the manufacturers!!
Women are losing their lives, and in some cases the inability to ever have children without serious complications. Please do not ever take or even think about taking the patch…your very life depends on this. I’m lucky to even be alive today from it.

February 12, 2007 at 10:50 pm #538658I don’t think they care; the pharmasuticals are just in it for more money, and until the drug gets pulled off US markets, I don’t think it would get pulled overseas. They will keep the drug out there until the class action suit finally goes through (takes years), so in the meantime they make more money. But hopefully all the lawsuits will do some major hurt to them. It’s too bad now that more women are having to suffer and die needlessly over this. I’m personally highly outraged.
The researh was originally done and covered up for the US market…and even now doctors who know about the effects STILL PRESCRIBE IT! Luckily I have called up some various gynological offices and found that some have willingly stopped prescribing the drug. Others, I’m sure the doctors get kickbacks for getting more prescriptions on it for. Sad but true.
February 12, 2007 at 10:56 pm #538659That is true. Most people are in it for the money and it is too bad that other people have to suffer. I hope by getting the word out that they will beat them at their own game.
I can understand the legal system, sometimes here it will take more than 2 years to get things resolved because there are so many cases out there. And more people doing stupid stuff or just not thinking.February 12, 2007 at 11:49 pm #538660I’m not sure how it works in the US, but in Canada, you can call the company and let them know about it. It’s called an adverse event. Unfortunately, during clinical studies, a lot of these effects don’t show up, because studies are comprised of screened patients. The more adverse events declared after the product is on the market, the better informed the company and the government. That’s why Vioxx was taken off the market, by the company. Too many cardiovascular adverse events.

February 13, 2007 at 1:10 am #538662Once a drug is out on the market, this is when they find out that you shouldn’t take it with, let’s say, Aspirin. Some drugs also interact with food, like grapefruit juice. They try to include this during the studies, but the reality is, there’s just too many factors and variables involved!
I used to take a drug that made me sweat. Sure enough, the company that made it updated their monograph to include sweating. That thing might have showed up during the studies, but maybe only 1 or 2 patients mentioned it. Some people don’t mention the side-effects they feel at all.
And then there are doctors who prescribe medication off-label, for something that it’s not indicated for. So more side-effects can show up.

People make such a big deal out of taking about 15 seconds a day to swallow a stupid pill. Yea, you may die from blood clot, heart attack, or stroke, but if I found out I was pregnant there is a good chance that I would die from that anyway. LOL
Besides, all these other patches and what not have the same side effects PLUS a buch of other screwed up things they keep discovering everyday!

Get the copper and there are hardly ANY side effects, and it lasts 10 YEARS!! I swear by it, esp if you really have no intentions of having kids. 😀
February 13, 2007 at 10:31 am #538665Yep I am with ski on this one, and the non-hormone one if possible, but in Canada they recommend only having the same one in for 5 years.
February 13, 2007 at 10:49 am #538666The copper is good for 10 years. The hormonal one is good for 5 years, but it has side effects like weight gain, etc… I dont know about you, but if I wanted to gain weight, I would have a baby. 😛 I will not take a BC that makes me any bigger!! 😯

I don’t think it is as simple as that. There will always be some people who experience the worst side effects of drugs, and that includes those for the ring as well as the pill. I use the Nuva Ring and I much prefer it over the pill I took for years, not just because of ease of use, but because I experienced less minor side effects associated with both (and the major and minor side effects of the pill I was taking were the same as those for the ring).
I’m glad you ladies had great experience with the Copper and you recommended it to the readers. I’ve done some reading on it previously and the complications/ side effects and the slow release of copper into the body make it not the method for me. Just a personal choice.

I just had terrible side effects with the pill. Also, you have to remember to take it every day. Not too big a deal, but I travel alot, and if I forgot them, I would be screwed… well, I guess I wouldn’t be, Hu?
February 13, 2007 at 7:33 pm #538669Whoa what’s IUD??? I never want kids, I keep asking about getting permanently “fixed” my my doctors won’t help me out. I am so forgetful, I am a spaz with the pill but it’s all I got right now. The shot taht lasts for 3 months is nice and all but it had awful awful awful side effects on me.
