He’s so…..spotty!!
A hoopoe is a bird I found while I was looking for reference pics…They are native to Europe, Asia and Africa and make an “oop oop oop” call, hence their name. I decided it was so pretty I just HAD to make a griffin out of one someday. It happened sooner than I thought! I chose the cheetah for the butt kind of randomly, but I think it works allright… it’s difficult to make the cheetah spots look good, because they really are mostly uniform and pretty small…I don’t know if I succeeded. The last pic was taken with the flash…the real color of this guy is somewhere in between.
(for all those waiting on commissions from me, I just got my naked PYOs yesterday and will start on them ASAP!!)

February 7, 2007 at 6:15 am #536591Side note: The German name for the hoopoe is “Weidehopf.” It’s a really stinky, messy bird, but beautiful to watch. They’re rare; I rarely see them.

Wow, cool!! 😀 (p.s. this griffin is not stinky OR messy! LOL! Saddly, he also doesn’t go “oop oop oop.”)

Thanks! I don’t think you can see it in the photos, but most of the spots are haloed…

Oh well. 😀 I’m sure his silence is forgivable since he doesn’t leave messes.
February 7, 2007 at 6:29 am #536595What a neat idea! The color scheme is really unique.
