Yes, hair.
Why?
Because I got my nearly-3-foot long tresses cut back today at the Aveda school. So in addition to the cheap haircut and free massage treatment (great for the depression I was feeling today, which might explain my emotional responses to stuff today… sorry), I got to keep the pieces that were trimmed.
Neat part though is it was the hairdresser who suggested keeping it as a donation to Locks of Love or the Canadian Cancer Society for their efforts in producing natural-hair wigs, for children suffering from cancer. That’s so cool! I had forgotten one could do this, and have never had a hairstylist suggest it before (then again, been a LONG time since I lopped off enough hair before… you need more than 8″ cut).
So now I just need to send the stuff off. Good thing it doesn’t have to cross the border so I don’t have to fill out a customs form. *LOL* “Um yeah.. it’s my HAIR ok? I’m sending someone hair….. what’s that look for? Why are you carting me away in this white jacket?”
Oh another note: if ever you plan on having a haircut that might take 2 hrs, make sure you eat (but don’t drink!!) first… thank goodness I didn’t do the drinking part… 😯
January 26, 2007 at 12:01 am #489431January 26, 2007 at 12:20 am #532536My hair used to be down past my rump, and I had it cut and donated to Locks of Love too. My mother had breast cancer and lost all of her hair in the treatment so I felt strongly about donating it. My sister did also (hers was longer than mine!).
Good for you!

My art: featherdust.comJanuary 26, 2007 at 12:27 am #532537That is so awesome you are donating your hair! Must have taken lots of nerve to cut your hair (my sister has really long hair and I have to convince her each time to let me cut it to the middle of her back). How much did you cut off since you say it is a “trim” yet needed at least 8″ for the donation?
January 26, 2007 at 12:29 am #532538That’s just totally awesome and generous of both of you! I had a friend who lost her hair during chemo and she was just devastated. She said she knew in the broader scope of things it wasn’t a big deal but she just felt so naked. And she said everytime someone looked at her hat or scarf she knew they were thinking “look, she has cancer.” She didn’t want to be defined as just a cancer patient. Plus it made her feel ugly at a time she was tired and sick. Once she got a wig she liked her spirits rose. I believe in the past cutting a woman’s hair off was a punishment in some cultures and I can see why.
3 cheers for donating to Locks of Love! Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!
January 26, 2007 at 12:31 am #532539Thanks. 😉 I figure, just ’cause I don’t want it anymore doesn’t mean someone else can’t use it! We have cancer somewhere in the family, but luckily neither I nor anyone I know in my immediate relations has had to deal with it. We have plenty of other diseases to contend with. 😛
I’m repeatedly told how pretty my hair is, so some little girl will probably be thrilled to get a long curly little princess wig out of this stuff, I bet.
Actually, just noticed Locks of Love is in the U.S. Oh well, that’s fine! Either way, if I donate to either (or split it for both) they’ll give some child or adult a nice do!
January 26, 2007 at 12:37 am #532540Ah, turns out it was a minimum of 10″, not 8″, or so it says here, and the hairdresser took off 10″. However! Locks of Love says curly hair can be pulled taut to measure straight, and it comes to no less than 15″ that way! Holy crap! *LOL* I had a LOT of hair!
It wasn’t such a big deal for me. I always used to feel defined as a ‘girl’ by having long hair, and love long hair, but I am occasionally tired of having it all over and in my face. It’s curly and frizzy as hell, so I wanted to try it really short for only the second time in my life. We left enough length to keep it weighted down so I don’t get a ‘fro, though (something kids used to tease me about when I was in school).
It’s slow to grow out, so it’ll be awhile till it’s tame-able again I’m sure, but it’ll come. And then maybe I’ll just get it cut again! I’ll be a wig factory! ;D
It does feel a bit alarming to lose a piece of yourself though. The first time it was cut like this, I was 7 (and it was NOT my idea I assure you!), and they just tied it in a braid and lopped it off. That was a bit traumatic at the time. 😯
January 26, 2007 at 12:56 am #532541I donated the last time I got a drastic haircut, and I have every intention of doing it again when I get my next cut in two or three years.
By then my hair will be well past my butt, so I figure they can cut it in half and make two wigs, or three! It’ll be nearly a yard of hair. I intend to get it cut right up to the ears when I do get it done. But first I want to enjoy having really long hair. It’s past my waist now, and still growing fast. I’m lucky to have hair the grows like mad. The last time I got it hacked off it took less than a year to hit my shoulders again, and it’s only been four more years to get it all the way past my waist. I love my hair, yay!
January 26, 2007 at 1:00 am #532542Yeah, you posted a pic of you with your hair down and long that one time and I said to myself “My god, she’s got my hair!” Only yours looks much easier to keep under control. Mine’s so thick and prone to frizz it isn’t funny. ;P
Kinda wish I had taken a pic of mine before I got it cut. I only had, oh, a whole three weeks to prepare for it! *LOL* Just plain forgot I guess…
January 26, 2007 at 5:44 am #532543That is the most awesome thing ever. Whenever I see the makeovers on Oprah where they cut the hair and send it to locks of Love, it always makes me weep. I think you did a wonderful thing!
January 26, 2007 at 5:50 am #532544Aw gee, Ski, t’weren’t nothin’ really… *shuffle shuffle of the feet*
It seemed like such a logical thing to do. I mean sure, I was kinda hoping for a couple inches less, but I had planned on lopping off a lot anyway. Kinda sad to see it sitting there now, and I can’t stop stroking it or playing with it (so soft… I’ll miss that).
But, like I said, it WILL be back. It’s getting it to leave that’s the problem… ¬_¬

January 26, 2007 at 6:16 am #532546Well, I suppose I could try! I might have an old ‘longish hair’ pic to use somewhere. I haven’t had many photos taken of me for years though… 😯 Somehow that strikes me as wrong.
January 26, 2007 at 7:05 am #532547I had to go back and read this whole thread again. I just think both you and Nam are so brave. I have long hair, but it grows so slow that I will never cut it. I have not done anything but trim in 13 years and it still is not as long as I would like. (Not even to my lower back) Mine is curly like yours, though, and prone to frizz. I wonder if they straighten it for the wig? Its dead, right? So if they straighten it, will it stay straight? Maybe they will just keep it curly! Will it still frizz?
January 26, 2007 at 5:32 pm #532548I wondered that too… all my little ponytails were laid out to dry, and they’ve all managed to frizz out on their own. I would think they would leave it curly/wavy, but perhaps treat it to keep its shape and define the curls better. Since it’s dead, it might not be a good idea to do anything damaging to it since it wouldn’t be able to repair itself.
Then again, hair is supposedly only alive right where it comes out of the follicle; so the rest of a head of hair is supposedly all dead anyway (I’d look that up to confirm though…).
Long story short…. I dunno. 😉
