October Raffle Poem

Apologies for posting this so early – I’ve been running around like crazy trying to get everything ready for the wedding (eeeee 26 days to go!). I wanted to make sure this got done, too, and I know it’s just going to get busier! So, without further ado, and with many thanks to Poe for letting me borrow his structure, I present:

The Raffle

Once upon a Monday bleary, while I labored, weak and weary,
With a faint but noticeable hangover from the night before
While I plodded, nearly sleeping, suddenly there came a beeping,
From my cell phone, reminder bleeping, in my purse upon the floor
“’Tis some alert,” I muttered, “A thing to do, of this I’m sure!”
Only this and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I moved over, it was in the cool October;
And I rummaged through my purse for the cell phone I deplore
Eagerly I wished to mute it;—vainly I had sought to root it
From my purse that needed cleaning, messy, always, evermore—
From the depths of my coach handbag, took the phone from out its core
Set to snooze ten minutes more.

And the silence, quite desired, trying hard to not get fired
Bought another ten more minutes for things I needed done before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
“Girl you got this, get that fax sent, then have a little coffee more!—
Get through the day and then at 6pm you’re off and out the door;—
Then you’ll get that poem done, sure.”

Presently the day grew longer; and my nerves got nice and stronger,
“Windstone Forum,” said I, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I had not won, when I agreed to get this poem done,
But in the months that part us, a lovely Dragon came unto my door,
And now I can win this raffle – nevermore
All my windstones ever after must be purchased from the store.
