I had an eBay male dragon purchase come to me unbroken this weekend. Yay! But he is so filthy. Ick! I am using a small paintbrush dipped in water to remove all the sticky dust in the many many many many crevices. Is that okay? Picture of clean area in lower left corner on purple-blue, dirty on green-yellow.

Also, there is a lot of black on the scale edges. Is that all supposed to be there? I was able to wipe some off fairly easily. Didn’t know if that was intentional paint or not, before I go attacking the rest. Attached is a pic where there is a bunch of black ON a large green scale.

Am I wrecking the guy more than all the little chips he’s already got?

You are doing a good job! A little soap and water won’t hurt him. Just don’t use a solvent, or vinegar.

As long as he doesn’t soak, he should be ok.  Don’t leave water on him too long.  I haven’t seen a rainbow dragon in person, but the black could be antiquing to make the scales stand out more.  Several of the colors are done that way:  a darker color is painted on and then mostly rubbed off leaving the dark color in the crevasses.  From your pictures, it looks like you are doing a good job cleaning him.

I think the black is the antiquing they use after they paint the whole thing to make the colours stand out more.  If the dragon has a clear coat I don’t think the black should come off so easily though but I would probably leave it unless you think it looks like dirt.    I bought some old dusty, dirty dragons in the past and I put them in my tub, rinsed them lightly with my telephone shower, took a soft cloth with some natural face soap, wiped them all over with that and then rinsed them again.  Then I took them out, put them on a towel and dried them with a soft towel and they were fine.  Just be warned though with this method it did get the bottom pads wet and I had to lay them on their sides on my bed to let the pads dry.  To clean in between crevices, a soft toothbrush and water is fine to use as long as you don’t scrub too hard.

I use a little bit of Dawn dish liquid and a soft brush with room temperature water for heavy duty cleaning and scrubbing and have never had a problem.

I went over all of it today, going to give a few days to get nice and dry. The white washcloth I was using to dab the brush, before getting fresh water, ended up covered in lots of brown spots. Would that be cigarette smoke residue? The statue doesn’t have an odor, but maybe it has gone away.

I scrubbed off most of the dust, and now it reveals a lot of dings!

“Is there something on my face? What? No? Something is NOT on my nostril?”

“I took an arrow to the knee… and something bit off some of my tail.”

“My wing? ‘Tis but a scratch!”

                  “Another on my tail…?”

“And my tail again… so maybe I forgot the Tailbiter Repellent once or twice”

“This was NOT an arrow to the arm. This was full-contact touch football. Dragons don’t touch lightly.”

“I went to get my ear pierced but the employee missed the ear a little.”

He looks great!  You’d never guess he had so many ‘battle scars’ or so much dirt when he first came to you!

Sometimes the little repairs are the most difficult to disguise. The chunk on the tail was the easiest part truthfully. It was the little bitty scrapes and rubs that were the hardest part to be honest. Many times the apoxie sculpt will not adhere to such a tiny repair so I have to resort to other tricks. To be perfectly honest, there is a product made by Citadel called “green stuff” and it works wonders on little bits and hairline cracks.
