I hope that you like what you are painting, the colors you choose and the way you paint. That should be #1.

The audience here is very focused, small and limited. There may be better places to sell items like this, though I don’t know where. eBay is not really a good place, because I think it’s mostly people who know what they are looking for and want it really cheaply. A hippocampus statue in exotic colors isn’t really something most people are thinking about on eBay. There must be some kind of artists site out there, besides etsy, where you can reach a more suitable audience.

Thanks for the votes of confidence Ela_Hara and Tig3r06. Much appreciated as notification date approaches.

On a side note, think I could get some critiques on my PYOs? I like the work I do on them, but was wondering if there is something I could improve? I ask because while I get a positive reception whenever I post pics of them (which I appreciate to no end) they move SO slowly. Are they too bright for people’s tastes? Not elaborate enough? Too elaborate? As a seller of PYOs am I just unpleasant to deal with? I just wonder because I see simpler PYO designs sell faster and more complex designs sell faster and I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. Any friendly critique or advice is welcome.

I think a lot of people just don’t have a lot of money to spare these days. So many people don’t have money to buy luxuries. Your piece has to be seen by someone who can afford art AND who loves it. Art preferences are very personal, so the small audience here may not include somebody who both loves it and can afford it.

Speaking only for myself, I am VERY picky about colors and designs. I usually only like very simple designs. Your hippocampus has way too many colors that are too different from each other to appeal to me. Your pictures are sharp enough that I can see you are a skilled painter, so I don’t think lack quality is an issue. I’ve noticed that before about your work – it looks like good quality, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. Actually, there are very few PYOs I like, just like I dislike a lot of the eBay test paints. But, I can tell by the eBay selling prices that in many ways, my tastes are very different from a lot of people’s. The highest price auction I’ve seen when it happened was something that looked utterly hideous to me (the Koi Pond male unicorn).

My keyboard is broken. I keep pressing "Escape", but I'm still here.

For me, I notice I don’t like what most people like. So if I make a PYO to make myself happy while painting, he never sells. If I think “gotta appeal to the masses”, he sells. I’m stuck with a ton of PYOs I painted simply because I wanted to actually enjoy what I was painting and well, those just don’t sell for me (and I once offered some as “pay what you want” and they STILL didn’t sell!). I really like the latest PYO I painted, but no one has come forward asking to purchase him.
Like Rylorien, eye colors. I HATE blue eyes. I think this is because of Windstone themselves. 99% of what windstone makes production wise has blue eyes and I just hate that. I want variety. So if I’m going to buy a PYO, I actually do avoid blue eyed ones. And that’s why you never see me paint a pyo with blue eyes.
(my one exception is when I’m commissioning or asking during a swap for a piece painted like a favorite character. Then please, blue eyes are a must if that character has them)

The sculpt is another thing. I don’t particularly care for the hippocampus. Or the unicorn, wolf, phoenix or cat-gryphon +++etc. So while I’ll still purchase those pyos if the paint job just really hits me in the face, I just tend not to want them.

And to be honest, I don’t like bright pyos. Not something I’d ever buy. And yellow is the “worst” for my tastes. This doesn’t mean you didn’t paint something fantastic (because you did, he’s awesome), but in terms of myself, I don’t want a bright yellow statue around.

(and to agree with GardenNinja… I can’t understand how people can pay so much on these ebay pieces that look so downright awful to me! Very clearly my tastes don’t match)
And yes, free money is always an issue.

Well first I have to say I didn’t expect so many in depth replies.  I want to say thank you for taking the time to do so.  Anytime someone makes the effort to create a thought out reply of more than a sentence online is quite nice.

To be honest, I was aware of the trouble I’d have putting anything up for sale around the time of the Kickstarter.  It was a grand Kickstarter with a lot of cool add ons and rewards.  In terms of money, I’m well aware of the problems of having free money to spend.  Something is always coming up.  I would have liked to participate in the Kickstarter myself but as I’m trying to save money to pay for classes…well, there you go.  So the free money point is one I’m familiar with and point taken.  There are also all the wonderful little grab bags that regularly pop up and special color schemes that suddenly get released.  Those difficulties I’m familiar with.

Finding somewhere else to put my stuff sounds like a must.  I detest selling on eBay because as was pointed out, no one wants to pay for the work put into a paint scheme.  They’re looking for as cheap as possible.  If I were to put ‘Sea Flowers’ onto eBay I might get $50 and that’s it.  Which isn’t exactly fair to me.  Not with the amount of time I put into him.  I’ll probably either go Etsy or wait until I have several PYOs and get a booth at an anime convention or something.  Perhaps the art festival that is held once a year in my area.

So aside from those points I got that there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with my painting skill (which is a relief).  But my color schemes for the most part are swing and misses.  Which is fair, I enjoy painting them and the challenge of getting the idea onto the sculpt is great but not everyone has my tastes.  My dad told me that I’m wasting my time painting.  And I guess if I’m trying to paint to earn spare money he’s right.  So I’ll just stick to painting for recreation and if someone wants to buy it here they’ll contact me.  But if not I’ll just save it and see about that Etsy thing or a booth at a convention.

Thanks for all of your time and feedback.  It’s been much appreciated.

Ithink your ‘Sea flowers’ paint is gorgeous, my only critique is the base, much like Rylorian, I think it’s too busy considering how bright and colorful the Hipp is. It’s hard to enjoy the design and colors of the Hipp itself against the many colors and color blocking on the base, the eye is going too many places imo. I’ve always thought if one part of piece is going to be colorful and fantastical, then the other half has to be more subdued and ‘tamed’ so that the eye can focus on the star(in this case, the Hipp) and then it can drift over and enjoy the rest of the piece.

I want to agree with what everyone else said, you’re a wonderful painter, but sometimes it’s all about being finding the ‘right time right person’ to sell a PYO. With so many awesome things being sold right now by WS, it is a bit harder to move your own art in such a fairly small community. I think if we had more people here on the forum we’d see more PYOs being moved as there would be a larger pool of prospective buyers with all kinds of different tastes and preferences to sell to.

Btw, I think the Anime or art convention idea is awesome!

For me, I have always enjoyed your painting. But the colors are not typically ones that call to me.

Just like Melody’s Grab Bags, they are all beautiful but some call to you and some don’t. I think what calls a person is very visceral and sometimes you’re not even sure what it is you like about sonething.

I try to paint things that are in colors that the “general public” seems to be drawn to but I try to do it in such a way that if it doesn’t sell, it will still be a piece that I would like to display. Some pieces that I paint I don’t really like but I take hope that it will sell from this forum. Just watch all the Grab Bags and how each of us finds different ones to love. It may take a while to sell but most usually do.

You do gorgeous work and your talent shines thru in each piece. Keep it up, even if just for your own pleasure.

You know, the funniest thing about so many people mentioning the base on ‘Sea Flowers’ is that the entire time I was painting it I was bothered by what I thought was washed out and boring.  I thought it didn’t match the Hippocampus at all because of that.  I thought it was dingy, pale, gray and dirty looking.  Funny, no?

What is even more amusing is that the individuals who really like my work are usually the most pinched for money.  And I understand their frustration.  It is SO annoying to see something you’d love to get and then have to hold back because it wouldn’t be practical or wise to get it at the time.  Especially if its something you know is a one time thing.

It’s funny how that works out! I guess we can never really know how others will react to our work, I find many times it’s a lot different than how we expect it to go. xD

Well, I just finished my most recent Windstone paint project.  But as he’s a repaint I can’t post him here.  If you’re interested in taking a peek at ‘Galaxy Tides’ you can check him out on my FB page or my dA page.  Links to either of my pages is in my signature.  If you’re interested in the story behind him, check out the dA page.

Wow! He’s fantastic! You can really see the hours put into making him such a pretty beastie. I personally am not 100% sold on the colors in the galaxy but the galaxy itself is very well painted, and I love the python effect that the galaxy’s ‘clouds’ make on his underbelly from throat to tail. Gorgeous all-around!

Aw, thanks so much Ela & Rylorien.  You know I hadn’t thought about the python-esque look the gas clouds gave, but I can definitely see it now.  Its interesting to see how people interpret the same piece!  And I am proud of him, he was a labor of love.  🙂

You know, looking back…I never even mentioned how my ranking for progression went!  I got in!  Woo woot!  There is going to be a lot of work in the near future and a LOT of penny pinching…but it’ll all be worth it!  So ‘Galaxy Tides’ is probably the last thing I paint for awhile.  However, once I finish my program and get a new job I have a HUGE project with PYO pieces planned.  It should prove super challenging and something that to my knowledge hasn’t been attempted by anyone here yet.  But I’m ready for it!
