http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h196/drag0nfeathers/100_2388.jpgHe’s very scared, but seems to be friendly enough. I thought it was a sugar glider at first, but I guess it’s not. He hasn’t tried to bite or anything and likes applejacks =) I need to get a wire cage for him so he can glide around.
So Mimi any tips???

January 31, 2007 at 4:10 am #534447Well, if it ends up being friendly and stays healthy I probably will. If it starts to get unhealthy I guess I’l set it free. i dont really know yet.

I had a pair of sugar gliders, once…they weren’t friendly, but they were AWFUL cute…they made a ton of noise at night, though…

I read online that I should put him im a hoodie pouch or in a coat pocket and keep him with me for 3 hours a day to develop a relationship with it so it will become more friendly. Apparently they have a loving nature and love to be held close to the body. *reading online tutrials about flying squirrel care*

Oooooh….he’s so cute!!! I’m so glad that you found him and saved him! I’ve never done any squirrel rehabilitation myself, but Clarissa Summers is quite an expert and has some great info on her website. The link there goes straight to the flying squirrel section but be sure to check out the other info on that page. You can also email her for advice and she’s always been really helpful with people in the Yahoo Squirrel Lover’s Club who are rehabilitating baby squirrels.I hope everything works out and you can keep him! I would love to see pictures as this guy grows up. 😀 But if you don’t think its working out, you might want to bring him to a squirrel rehabilitator in your area.

I was reading through the flying squirrel section on Clarissa’s website and apparently she has a different opinion on this:
“It’s never a good idea to carry them around all day in pockets or pouches, no matter what pet shop people or breeders say. How would we like it if some monster hauled us around all night when we’re trying to get our nice, peaceful rest! Too much noise, too many vibrations, and distractions. The idea, I’m sure, for the “toting” them around is so they will bond to their caretaker, but that’s absolute nonsense! They all bond just by being taken out 4 times a day to feed and tickle to make go to the bathroom.
The best place for them during the day is in a small cage (when they are babies — on a heating pad on low) with little warm wooly blankets they can hide and snuggle under.”
You might want to email Clarissa to see what she thinks about carrying him around for 3 hrs a day (vs. all day)…
I also saw some info on her website which seems important: “Flying squirrels are prone to rickets, seizures, going down in their back legs and sudden “unexplained” deaths if their calcium/magnesium/Vitamin D needs are not supplied. I give mine 1/4th of an inch-square nutball daily to prevent these debilitating situations from occurring.” There’s a lot of other info too…
January 31, 2007 at 7:23 am #534454I’ve heard from just about EVERYWHERE (when I was doing research for my sugar gliders) that you’re supposed to carry them in a pouch on you for at least SOME portion of everyday, to bond with them. I think she’s right about not carrying them ALL day, but I think a few hours would be perfectly healthy.

-J R R TolkienJanuary 31, 2007 at 8:51 am #534455Awwwww… how precious!! I really hope you manage to rehabilitate him. How old is it? Have you managed to tame it pretty well?? Lemme go back and read a bit more carefully and see if you have already answered this…

You might be right. I’ve also posted a question about this in the Yahoo Squirrel Lovers group to see what other people who have rehabilitated flying squirrels before think about this issue.
By the way, you mentioned in your other post that your sugar gliders weren’t very friendly. Did you also carry them with you for a few hours a day? If you did, then I’m wondering if carrying them around is effective for bonding…
January 31, 2007 at 3:15 pm #534457Oh, it’s so cute! Keep us updated on how it goes.

So far I’ve gotten a couple of responses from people at the Yahoo Squirrel Lover’s group who have experience with flying squirrel rehab, and it looks like the opinions are mixed. Here’s what they said in response to my question:
mimitrek wrote:A friend of mine recently rescued a young flying squirrel that was apparently in danger of freezing to death, and she would like to try to rehabilitate him. I’ve referred her to Clarissa’s website for info on that.
Does anyone know whether its necessary (or good) for her to carry the squirrel around with for a few hours a day, as is recommended by various people?
penny wrote:just make sure it’s kept warm..i used a heating pad in one end of my box with my squirrels..even as tiny babies..they could move on/off heat as needed…my daddy worked in logging when i was young..so we had flying squirrels alot..and i remember my mom toting ours in her shirt pocket..it went everywhere with us…
janet wrote:I would recommend not. The baby needs as much rest as possible.
Snuggling would be ok while she is feeding, but babies are not used to being joggled around, and human noises.
A heating pad on low in 1/2 of the cage is best.
Thanks for sending her to Clarissa. 🙂I would recommend getting Clarissa’s opinion on this also, as I mentioned in previously.
