        I visited my advisor today.

        And I’m having a dilemma.

By taking another class and doing my thesis, I could graduate in May. This would be on top of 12 hours already (two art history classes and two design classes) and two jobs. I don’t want to rush things, but OMG, so close.

        But…

Am I ready? If I called my adviser back to register for that one last class and talk about my thesis, would I be able to do it all? And I don’t even know where to start as far as job hunting. And what about a masters? SIUC doesn’t have a design masters, I’d have to apply somewhere else. Would it even do me any good?

I’m terrible at making up excuses for myself, but right now even the ones I’m thinking of are a tad lame.

That sounds like an awful lot to undertake. Perhaps you shouldn’t worry about getting it done early and just get it done. It would be far worse if you over did yourself and ruined your GPA making it hard for you to get into a masters program.

I would help but I am just to tired to get out of bed today~

            I should, perhaps, clarify.

That’d add up to 15 hours and a thesis, which consists less of writing and more of designing. (making a logo, a website, business card, letterhead, etc.)

I must say that I agree with BiPolar Bear. You already have what sounds like a very full schedule, and add a thesis on top of that? That’s a good way to cause some major stress in your life. I know that wanting to be done with it all is really tempting (it took me 12 years to get through my major) but a thesis is not something you want to rush or jeopordize because you are just too tired to do it properly. I’m sorry, but my vote would be to wait a little longer for that part of the education. Everything in its’ proper time and place. Good luck! 🙂

I guess you know better than any how much you can handle. It’s tough deciding how much of a load to carry. I remember (literally) having nightmares that I wouldn’t figure it out properly and graduate on time. I wanted my degree in 4 years and that was that.

                  Tell me about it.

I’ve been struggling to get this degree since 2005 when I got back to S. IL. For two semesters I was working full time, part time classes.

Now it’s full time classes, part time work. I’m ready to get *out*!

Having just gone through writing my thesis in one semester in order to graduate, I can tell you that if I were to do it again, I would spread it out over two semesters or at least do it when I’m not taking classes and teaching too. It was a lot of work and strain to get it done on top of everything else in one semester.

I would suggest finishing up your classes first, and then concentrate on your thesis. I’m not sure how much time it’s going to take you since it’s more designing and less writing, but you want to make sure you can concentrate on it and not rush it. You also don’t want to make yourself sick trying to get everything done all at once. Good luck with whatever you decide. 😀

Wow… that’s a lot of work! You know yourself best, but if you wanted to take on the extra work I would maybe suggest just taking the extra class now. See if you can do the thesis remotely (submit what is needed over the web (teleconferencing, with an occassional face to face – not sure how far you live from the campus). Does your college offer a summer session? You could always work full time (or two part time jobs) and finish the course and thesis then and be done for the fall. If you chose to do the 5 courses and your thesis at once, can you start working on your thesis now (doing prep work, design work for it, etc.) now… though maybe plan it in chunks so you hand in part A this week, part B this week (even though it’s pretty much done), even if you it completely finished – and just do tweaks here or there to accomodate suggestions from your thesis advisor?

Just some suggestions 🙂 I absolutely hated my thesis (and my department for that matter), so I can totally understand the “getting the hell out of Dodge” now feeling! My minor departments were soooo much better and supportive (and I definitely got much better grades with them than with my major, but eh, finances sort of dictate… couldn’t afford to stay longer and add the extra course and thesis for one of my minors to become a dual major – hoping to go back and get masters in areas I actually enjoy more!). Good luck either way!

*chuckles* I can’t do my thesis remotely. I have to do it under the eye of an instructor of my choice from the design program.

It was a thought. I know of several people who have done their thesis last (the only thing during a given semester or two) and just did the required visits/meetings and would submit their work via mail/email (though they were written and not design oriented). They did defend it in person as well.

If you don’t do it the fast way, when will you graduate, Rusti?

Ditto. I know you are in a rush to have it done, but taking on so much may just set you up for misery.

Dec 08. It will also mean another loan out from the Feds.
