Congrats on your successful horn-ectomy! It is a nervewracker! Mine got gummy the worst at the back, the head slopes up and makes it near impossible not to goop that spot up π Thankfully though, the new horn hides it perfectly, especially since I repainted the area too. Good job for you! That is a tough repair!
My absolute favorite glue is Beacon 527. They have this at Michael’s so it is easy to find. It used to be called Bond 527, so there’s a small chance you’ll find it under that.
This stuff is incredible! It has the strength of super glue with the elasticity of silicone, so it can take knocks and concussions much better than anything I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried a lot of glues! It has a corn syrup-like consistency, not quite runny, not quite gel. Highly recommendo. 8) I used it for my Kirin horn with great results. I use it for lots of stuff around the house too. Very handy!

*whew!* Thank you! It was so tough! I will see if I can’t hunt down the Beacon 527 glue, but if not I will try to find something close to it. I continued to imagine all of the horrible things that could have happened to my mommy kirin, so when it finally slid out I braced myself for the damage, but I was so relieved to see that it was a total success! 8) 8)
August 12, 2009 at 11:19 pm #779513Yay! If you can, try to dig out any remaining glue bits with a toothpick or needle. Old glue in the horn hole might prevent the new one from sitting correctly in there.
I just had a mommy unicorn arrive and her horn had snapped off, leaving the stem glued in π That was fun! The seller never double-boxed her, even after thanking me for sending her the Packing Tutorial. Riiiiiiight….

Ouch-that one is going to be hard to get out. π π
I really appreciate all of your tips! She looks just as good as new, now!
Oh-how do you plan on getting that horn stem out?August 15, 2009 at 7:07 am #779515Haha–I had it out in about 30 minutes. I used a needle to work out the epoxy until enough stem was exposed to grab a hold of it with pliers. Then I wiggled it out. The rest of the epoxy wasn’t too bad to remove.
You should put up a pic of your newly restored mummy!
